Newbie with a CNC foam cutter needs help
 

Hi guys!

A friend of mine and me want to start RC combat with slope gliders as cheap and easy way of having lots of fun. He is still learning to fly, so I guess flying an unbreakable plane will give him better fingers. :eek:
We have a CNC foam cutter, so building the planes should be piece of cake. However, we need some plans to follow, so I'd be more than glad if you just tell us where can we find some plans for a slope combat flyer, provided:
- We have no restriccions in size.
- A warbird would be a good idea.:D
- Cheap, fast construction.
- Foam, pVC pipe and coroplast as main ingredients.
- I've visited spadtothebone many times, but their designs are waaay too functional.:Dl mean we care about aesthetics.:D

PD. By the way, the foam used most times is "pink foam", isn't it? Do you know its commercial name in Europe?[:o]

Actually I think most of the guys cut their Slope gliders out of EPP foam. But of course you can make them out of just about anything from syrofoam, Dow blue foam or pink foam. You're best bet is just google for info.

By plans do you mean you need the dat files?

I mean exactly that, plans; no matter if the come in dxf, dwg, sldprt, dat format, as long as you can build a plane with the info it contains. I'm thinking of just getting a 3 view of a WWII warbird, increase a 10% the wingspan and cut it in foam with a wingspan of about 1m, I've been searching the internet all day and I only found two designs of combat planes, but they were powered models.[:o]

As far as I know there is no one that has plans for combat planes except the SPAD guys.

Over at http://www.texascombat.com there are several articles on how to build I/C "warbirds". You could take alot of those techniques and apply them to your slopers.

I usually import 3-views into TurboCAD and scale to the size I want then print them out, tack them to a slab of foam and cut out with a band saw. Then I shape the foam with a stanley SureForm tool, then medium then fine sandpaper.

Another couple of good sources is www.jkaerotech.com and www.georgiacombat.com. There are alot of ways of doing it, just need to pick out the techniques that work for you...

It's not at all hard to do what Thojo said, take a set of 3 views and scale them up in a CAD program. I did it for my Firebrand.

For your wing cutting, if you don't already have Profili, get it or something like it to generate your airfoil information.
