hi all,

i'm looking for ideas on how to make up streamers for combat flying. preferably they would be biodegradable. any help at all would be useful.

I assume you're able to purchase the paper party streamers over there. A large 6" roll from a dollar store contains enough 2" streamer material to make dozens of 1" wide streamers. The trick is in cutting the paper cleanly in half. This is the method I use: sandwich the paper roll between two, 6" diameter coroplast disks bolted together. Wrap the streamer roll with two, 1" wide strips of masking tape. Use a brand new box cutter blade to slice through the centerline as deep as you can go. You'll have enough streamers for everyone in a neat package. If the ground is wet you may want to use VCR tape streamers instead. Haven't tried it myself but the winter combat fliers in Canada use them from time to time.

I don't know if you can get it in the UK, but for wet weather, there is some stuff called "forestry tape". It's a wood-based product that holds up in damp weather, but will eventually degrade and is envroment-friendly. I think there is a link to it from Hattricks' site. I also like it for practice, since it tears harder than paper streamers.

Try www.forestry-suppliers.com. The stuff you are looking for is called, 100%Wood Fiber Enviro-Flagging. Part # 58033 for yellow, 58037 for orange, 58036 for blue, 58038 for red and 58039 for white. 3/4" wide X 250'. Cost varies per quantity[8D]

If you want some really labor-intensive wet weather streamers, start with some paper towel stock. The rolls of white, institutional paper towels with no perforations. Dye it orange or purple, and then, after it's dried, strip it using a paper guillotine. ;)

We actually used these for 1/2-A Combat at the 2001 Nats. For the big stuff, we used plastic tablecloth (not biodegradable, though).
