GWS Receivers
 

Has anyone been using the GWS receivers for combat? GWS-Online has the DR-8 8ch, dual con, select shift for 42 dollars including the crystal.

I bought one of their single conversion 4 channel from Tower Hobbies. I like the price. I haven't yet been able to fly the plane with this RX. I hope it performs as well as my Hitec Feather. I've tested that RX to up to a 1/2 mile with no glitches on my Shrike 10.

I bought the Nano(micro) 4 channel for my Eflite Ultimate electric, and I have flown it out to about 1/8 mile away and never had a glitch,, so it is great for the money I think it was 27 dollars. I will probrably buy another one for our Team Seaholm Avenger 1072's me and my buddies are going to build,,

The 8-ch duel conversion RX is probibly fine. I don't know how big or heavy it is, and I don't know who services it though. RX's take a beating in RC Combat, and it's nice to have somewhere you can sent it when it breaks. (not so much "if" as "when").

The small, single conversion GWS RX, I wouldn't use in a combat plane. I have one in a park flyer, and I get hits all the time, usually when other transmitters are on. It has great range when I'm flying by myself, but get a couple other TX's on in the wrong combination, and it's "hit city". It just does't toss out the intermodulation effects very well. At a competition, you'll have many TX's on at the same time, in very close proximity. I doubt the GWS single conversion RX's are up to the job. Not that there aren't single conversion RX's out there that are ok, but I'd be careful with such a cheap RX.

Also, in my expereince, caseless RX's have a much higher failure rate than RX's that have a plastic case. Many other guys use caseless RX's with out problems, but I've been phasing mine out in favor of RX's that have a protective case.

I difinitely would NOT use a GWS single conversion rx for a Open B or SSC combat plane. From my experience using one of them for a simple little e-combat plane they're only good short range and by themself. Mine seemed to work OK close in by itself but with a couple other transmitter in the area it did nothing but glitch all over the place. Using a parkflyer rx for combat is sucide for everyone concerned.

I've got several of the GWS 8 Channel Dual Conversion receivers and have used them in several contests and funflys and have never had a problem. IMHO they are the best receiver out there for the price. I did have one busted in a crash. It was way past warranty stage but I sent it in to Horizon and they sent me a new one at no charge. Can't get much better than that. BTW they are just a hair bigger than a Hitec 555 and I would guess about the same weight.
