shmo46,

You can get AJ's Avenger 8.0 from Neal Rhorke here http://www.waverc.com.. Is that what you are referring to? I assume so since both AJ and Neal were in Tucson combating this weekend.

Thanks again Web-Pilot!

yup, he was out here for the duel over the desert. great event. I talked to him a couple minutes about it, but didn't ask where to get the plane. (doh!) I didn't find out the connection between AJ and the plane till too late. (i'm new to this sport) He probably had a box or two in the car.

Is Neal the one who wears a cowboy hat helmet and flies the Skull Bandidt? If so i bought a Bandit from him. Nice guy. I was very impressed with both of these planes, and have decided to try both. I'm curently flying the preditor, tons of fun, but it doesn't turn like the Avenger.

shmo46,

I doubt that was Neal with a cowboy hat helmet and flying a bandit. I think Neal is still flying Avengers. If you saw someone with a Nebraska ball cap, that would be Neal. Very nice gentleman!!!!

I suppose it is possible there were two Neals there, but more likely it was a brain fart. I'm too young for senior moments!

I don't think i had the pleasure of talking to this guy, but thats easy to fix now that ive got the info.

Thanks guys,

My Avenger kit is on its way!

Any tips for modifications? weak spots? ways to lighten it?

I'm planning on using Hitech 225 MG servos for surfaces, and HS 81 for throtle. OS 25 FX or Magnum 28 with can pipe.

The Avenger is a great combat plane just build it like it says and don't change a thing. AJ has built 8 diffrent versions of this bad boy to get it to be great. He is only the open Natioal Champion if it's good enough for him it is good enough for me.

shmo46 11-27-2002 10:54 PM

Avenger?

... and no doubt good enough for me too, but i am quite sure that nothing is ever perfect (except me of course! :D ). I'm also sure that AJ would agree (that nothing is ever perfect). AJ started using regular nylon instead of the ripstop that comes with the kit, all the planes he had out here a couple weeks ago were done that way. I guess that would be version 9? As good as it is i think it is a safe bet there is a version 10 coming soon.

What if Henry Ford, Lockeed, Mc'Donald Douglas and all the other american innovators stopped at version 8? i would probably be writing this in Russian, or German (assuming my grand parents survived the ordeal).

So wave your flags, put on those tinking caps, and make our country great! :D

Hopefully my kit will arrive for the holiday weekend so i can get on with my patriotic duty. God Bless America!

Shmo,

The fella in the cowboy hardhat is my best friend Mic, the organizer of the event. He was flying a Bandit, and he has an Avenger as well. His handle on www.rccombat.com is Micster.

Thanks Will,

Many appologies and thanks to Micster. Just read a nice article by Mic on rccombat.com. Was especialy pleased to read the event will go on again next year. Wouldn't miss it for the world.

Avenger upgrades

Shmo I know I am always looking for a better way to build my combat planes. AJ is one of the best combat friends I have and I can tell you what he's probably cooking in his evil lab. There's only one problem even if we (you and I and whoever else) built a better flying bird than AJ we would still have to outfly him. That's the real key. Good Luck! Were going to need it. Okay here is my take on the Avenger mods I would try. Take the basswood and carefully cut lightning holes in it in a honeycomb fashion then laminate both side with the G-10. Takes out a little weight but hopefully doesn't sacrifice structural integrity. Then thin the root of the wing about an 1/8" and increase the thickness at the tip by the same. Also add about an inch to both root and tip cord in the wing. Then increase the subfin area to were it hangs down about 3 or so inches gets a little more grab in turns. You will hopefully come out with a ship that turns tighter than the stock arrangement. But it does'nt really matter cause he's going to kick are butts anyway. Oh yeah he got that plain nylon idea from me so I should get a royalty or something for that.

Whatever you do have fun

I got some Avengers now, so you better add something to yours..Seems like I still owe you one..or two...OK maybe three :stupid: Hell I was deadly before..I ought to be down right comical now.

Thanks Dodger.

No doubt i'll get kicked around for a while no matter what i fly, but half the fun of the sport is the tinkering.

I just read an article by AJ that indicated that one of his strategies is to target similar flying planes. Doh! maybe i'll just send this kit back to Neal and pick something else!

I'll have to look into getting some cores cut to experiment with.

I agree, you should definatly get royalties for the nylon. He probably has a few bucks of prize money still in his pocket, so accept no excuses!

Shmo, I just cut some experimental wing cores for Neal Rohrke's new design combat plane if you want some to play with e-mail me and we could probably work something out. Probably won't get any royalties there either LOL.

Chuck if you are flying stock Avengers I will still get you next year I have allready made some great mods that will chew you up. But don't let it get you so upset that you won't mix ritas. LOL I'm really looking forward to flying in the Texas Round robin events next year hope to see you there take care buddy.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Cool!

I would love to try the longer cord version of the Avenger wings like you described. I'll e-mail my info.

My Avenger arived today!

Looks pretty good. The fuse is already laminated (fiberglass sheet over hard wood) so it going to be a little harder to lighten it than i thought, so i am going to leave it alone. The wing cores are nicely cut, but strangely they make the cords about an inch too long, the instructions say to trim the cord to a specific length, so it is quite inviting to leave the cords longer.

If i trim them to spec i'll get a wing loading around 15.2 OZ per square foot. If i add an inch of wing cord, loading drops to around 13.6 The thing that bugs me is why would the cord be longer than needed? Has AJ already been here and found thinner is better?

Shmo46,

Please send those cores back, they're TOP SECRET and weren’t meant for distribution… Just kidding… :D

The set of cores you received are a little wider and I apologize for not updating the instructions. The previous AVENGER kits, including the cores I’ve been flying all season, were shrunk slightly when translated to the CNC foam cutter. When Mike F. redid the data points to include the spar grooves the original size came back.

Long story short, the wings I used for Tucson, the same cores you received, ended up being about a ½” longer then the instructions and plans. I just trimmed the trailing edge off to a thickness of 0.5” which left a root chord of 8.0” and tip chord of 5.0”. I couldn’t tell much difference from the old set of cores but the durability was improved plus the pre-cut spar grooves are great.

If you have any more questions or comments shoot me an e-mail at [email protected].

I’m in the middle of designing the AVENGER 9.0, like you said, “Nothings Perfect”. ;)

Got an Avenger Too

Avenger Fans,

I picked up an Avenger 8.0 Kit several weeks ago and now have about 20 flights on it. I too had the question about the chord length but cut the length down per the instructions. Doing this leaves about a 1.25" step between the bottom of the ailerons and the bottom of the trailing edge of the wing. I kept the upper surface of the wing and ailerons flush, so the hinge line is actually above center.

Turns out that my Avenger flies excellent. It's really fast, turns incredibly hard, and even has terrific slow speed characteristics. If you build it per the plans, you'll have a great plane!

A couple other things:

My plane ended up balancing at 2 1/8" from the leading edge. AJ recommends 1 3/4" to 2.0". I couldn't seem to achieve this balance point. I imagine that my combination of servos, engine, battery, etc. knocked me out of the range. Nonetheless, I'm extremely happy with my planes performance.

Another issue that came up was that I was slowly abrading away the tip of my muffler on landings (even though the landings were very slow). I added a skid per the plans (I used thin aluminum because the G10 scuffed quickly). At the end of the landing, the plane tips up on the nose and scraps the muffler. To save the muffler, I added a nice bead of JB Weld. The JB Weld sticks like crazy and is very durable.

My conclusion is that this is an outstanding combat plane. I'll be flying it in an event in San Diego this weekend. Looking forward to putting it through it's passes and hoping I wont stuff it before the meet is over.

Cool! its not everyday you get to talk to the guy who designed the plane you are building.

Between Propdodger and AJ I'll get all the best tips! the inside scoop! I'll have the best plane and RULE THE WORLD! (insert diabolical laugh here).

Stay tuned for updates as the ultimate weapon of world domination is being built....

Also stay tuned for the intervention where my friends and family take my Calvin and Hobbs books away.....

Avenger 9.0????

Avenger 9.0 CRAP!!! Now I'll have to work triple hard to make my planes fly as well as AJ's. It's hell keeping up with that college boy. It really sucks when your competition is an engineer. Oh well I better get cracken.

How are you scuffing your muffler and wearing down the G10? I hope your not landing on a runway.... Stick to the grass!

I also had problems getting mine to balance and it was a bit tail heavy. I ended up cracking it up on its first combat flight when I got a radio hit. But since you get the blueprints with the kit, I just built another one!

My landing options are: asphalt, barbed wire, or dirt. Tried the barbed wire once... not good. Dirt gets everywhere and causes me grief. Asphalt is the lesser of three evils. Either way, not too big of an issue; I have a large supply of JB Weld!
