Sig Wonder for combat
 

Just wondering if any one has used a Sig Wonder for combat. I know it would not be as durable as the foam jobs. I built one this winter and flew it for the first time the other day. What a blast, most agile plane I have flown yet. I was thinking of building a few for some of the guys in my club. No one else wants to risk one of there planes in combat. If I give them the plane they wont have an excuse right. I was also thinking of cutting the wing out of foam, and using PVC for the fuse, coraplast for the stabs. I think that the plane would get heavier if I did but it would be more durable. Any one else tried this.

The Wonder is fantastic flying airplane because it has such a light wing loading. By the time you build it out of proper Combat materials, it will fly like a dog due to the added weight. So, increase the wingspan for improved wing loading, then modify the tail group to be easier to build and more durable. By the time you're done you get done modifying it to be a competitive combat plane, it will closely resemble the average Open design. Might be better off to simply grab a plane already designed for combat and have at it. ;)

I was afraid of that. I think I will just build them stock for now. If we start having midairs maybe we will get into the real deal. There are propably only going to be 3 of us at flying the most. Small club, maybe only 7 of us that fly regularly and of that maybe two others that will try combat. We need some new young blood

Chances are, at first, cuts and mid-airs will be kinda rare. The someone will develop their depth perception to the point where they can see what is going on, and suddenly you'll have a mid-air almost every flight. That's part of the normal progression of flying combat. (beyond that, if you fly enough combat, your mid-airs start going back down as you start to see things earlier and are able to get out of the way and activly avoid mid-airs).

Another thing to consider.......those Wonders are mighty fast, and as you have discovered very agile. For guys just starting Combat, something a little slower is a lot easier, and less intimidating. Try checking out the S.P.A.D. site for some really cool Coroplast birds, that are easy to build....cheap to build.....and almost indestructable!!!!

Or you could just buy some Gremlin kits they are about the same price.

BTW: Mike, you will probably need a computer radio for mixing of the elevons on the gremlin.

I have a Futaba EXAP 6 channel radio so that will not be a problem. I'm looking forward to getting the gremlin. I would imagine that it flys allot like my wonder. I see that its recommended engine is a 25 - 40. I have both what would you recommend for it. I'm leaning toward the 40 because I am building another wonder and would like to put the 25 in that. I am guessing that it is a sheeted foam wing. Would you recommend covering it with film or something else.

Can the Gremlin fly in any class A, B or SSC depending on the engine that is installed on it. This looks like a great way to break into combat. Thinking of getting one too.

What size engine do you run in your wunder? I have an O.S 25 fx swinging a 10/6 prop. Tons of speed and power. Building a second one now for my son. I can fly around all but one gremlin at my field. Great little plane.

Currently right now in my Wonder is a OS 15 FP, but like I said I building a second one with a OS 25 FP up front, dual aileron servos, and maybe rudders, I haven't decided yet. I dont know if I built the first one with a little offset in the rudder or if it is the wait of the muffler to one side but it will do a hammer head when you stall vertical, always to the muffler side it looks kind of neat, but rudders would give some more options. I have most of the pieces cut out, and as soon as I finish up my Up Roar I will start on the Wonder.

I have a wonder with an OS .15LA. Not a rocket, but flies great! As ealry posts have said, they're no really set up for combat--too many other better options. Easy on fuel with a 15 and quick to launch.
