Greg,
I see you fly at the LARKS field where Jimbo, Travis and LT fly. They can help you a lot. Jimbo and LT like Raptors, and Travis has tried them all . A few planes come to mind. First the Skull Bandit is a very durable and competitive ship, it can be seen at www.screamingeaglerc.com. At the same site you can order the new Piranha, which is a really great new design. Lee Liddle of Dallas has designed a really great airplane called the Falcon which can be purchased as a Ready to Fly combat plane and you can even have it delivered with the servos installed from George Cleveland in New Orleans. His web site is http://pages.prodigy.net/gcleveland_grsmodels/. Last year's National Champion AJ Seaholm's Avenger is available from www.waverc.com. Finally the Bat Trick and Choker from three time National Champion Mike Fredricks are available from www.hattrickrc.com Hope this helps. Are you flying in the contest this weekend? |

Thanks for the help, but no I'm not I don't fly combat at the time but that is what started to interest me. Are you in the combat fly-in?

radio gear?
What type of radio gear do you usually use. Servos, battery packs, reciever, etc.
|
Combat plane?
I use all standard stuff now...I used to try to save weight and use micro radio gear....but the safety issue of the smaller servos and battery packs isn't worth it to me, so I've gone back to standard servos and 600 Ma batteries.

Greg,
After reading your comments and those of Tattoo I think you might enjoy something like the SPAD Hell on Rails (HOR) a lot. When I answered your question it was from a "high tech" point of view. After chasing the technology trail for a couple of years I am backing off to fly simpler stuff to have more fun. There are quite a few guys in Nacodoches having a ball with Spads. If you need their contact info, email me and I will send it along. |

For radio gear, I'm using a standard servo on elevator and aileron in all my planes, and a micro (hs-81) on throttle. I do manage to strip gears on my hs-81's a bit too much though.
I use 270mah battery packs. But I also have a fast field charger (FMA Supernova 250) My receivers are either Hitech 555, or FMA Extreme 4 or 5. They are inexpensive FM duel conversion receivers in 4 or 5 channels. For airplane, it depends on what the guys near you are flying. There's no sense in buying a scale 2610 plane if everyone is flying Open, and vice-versa. So talk to the guys flying combat near you and find out what classes they are flying, and what planes. It's not a bad idea to fly the same kind of airframe as the guys near you since it makes it easier to get setup help. |

Greg,
Come to the club this weekend, we've got a big contest scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with some of the countries best pilots scheduled to be in town. They're all great guys and fountains of combat knowledge. If you have the time and would like to help judge for the contest I'm putting all the judges names in a hat and will draw one for a Tufflight Predator which in my estimation is a great starting point for trying combat. Anytime you need help or info you're more than welcome to call just email me off the forum and I'll get you my number. Hope to see you this weekend. Travis Hanson aka "BigCountry" |

Greg,
The SPADs are the perfect trainer for the beginning combat pilot! Each one will cost you from 4 to 10 dollars without the engine and electronics. You are going to send one or two in for a dirt nap so I would start cheap. Once you get use to flying 4 foot off the ground chasing the last plane that has a streamer, then you may want to choose another plane, but that is all up to you. Check out the web site, http://www.spadtothebone.com/ and choose one that you like. My favorite is the Corostang. The best thing about the spads is that they can be built fast. |

Hey Travis,
I met you at the field last Saturday at the meeting for the combat fly-in. You might remember me as the younger flyer because I am 16. I am currently set up to judge at the event. I hope the weather will be good! Greg |

Sorry Greg,
Didn't put two and two together. You'll be in the best place possible to see what kind of planes are out there and the best direction to go. I've seen you fly and you have all the abilities to be a great combat pilot if you want. We just need to get you in the air with Jimbo or myself. If nothing else we'll put you up with my extra Predator and let you fly that. I appreciate your willingness to help with the contest. I think you'll really enjoy yourself. See you this weekend..... |
