9-3 APC Combat prop
APC makes a prop with a wide blade and large hub in a 9-3 size that is being used here in CO for combat. It is not the same as the skinny pylon looking prop that APC lists on their website. Does anyone know where to get them? I am looking for some sort of online source preferably.

RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
I call APC and order them direct. After all, it's not like you're going to order just 1 or 2 props, right?
I don't know of any online hobby shop that sells them. Tower might, but I'd have to check. I don't think they have the right picture there though. I forget, is there a 9x3 non-combat prop? If not, then any APC 9x3 is going to be ok. |
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
I ordered 6, 9-3 combat props directly from the APC website and they were the wrong ones. They look like a pylon prop you would put on a Nelson Q-500 engine. From what I understand Seaholm was involved in the design so maybe I should try him at his Avenger site.
Also from what I understand they make one that is 9.3-3. The props really work well and I have never been a fan of the popular MAS props. |
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
If you order from APC, you might have to specifiy the combat props. I've never had a problem, and it's usually my wife that orders them for me. I've also tried the 9.3x3. They work ok on the webras, but I've gone with the 9x3 instead since I think my planes fly better with the smaller prop.

RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
The props are available on the APC website here:
http://www.apcprop.com/cgi-bin/store...product=Combat Or just give APC a call like Kirk recommended. LP09330 9.3 x 3 Combat LP09030 9 x 3 Combat APC was kind enough to build these props based on ones I carved from the 10x3 Sport prop. The 9.3x3 was the first generation and turned out to be a little too much load for the piped OS FX .25. The 9x3 is about 600-800 RPM lower then a 9x4 MAS. Performance is slightly better through the turns and straight line speed is comparable. The tips are thicker and tougher to address a common issue combat flyers had with other APC offerings. The hub is also beefy enough to handle the higher RPM's, the main reason for development of these props in the first place. At the time, the MAS 9x4 was only rated to 18K RPM, most were spinning in the 19K range. A few reports had come in of the 9x4 MAS props shedding blades, so we tried to come up with a suitable alternative. We were also able to convince APC the $2 price range was where they needed to be since we tend to buy props by the dozens. Anyway, I hope they work out for folks, APC was a great company to work with. Here are some of the originals. http://www.teamseaholm.com/images/props2.jpg http://www.teamseaholm.com/images/apc4.jpg Have fun, fly hard, and be safe... |
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
Thanks for the info, AJ.
Btw, I still run the MAS props on my OS engines, but I use the 9x3 on most of my Webras. However, I do have one Webra that has eaten too much dirt, and it doesn't put out the RPM it used to. But Webras are ported such that they don't like running slow. So I run a MAS 9x4 on that one engine, and that allows it to wind back up the upper 18k range, which isn't really that much power, but it's enough to fly on. |
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
I run the APC 9x3 up here at altitude but like the MAS 9x4 when I head downstream to the thicker air.
|
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
I ordered 5 9x3 combat props from APC. They are more like the $4 range and not $2. I hope they are worth it.

RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
The problem with having to go through APC is their shipping costs. I think I paid like $15.00. I really want to find a better source. I do like how the prop works but I am still working on my entire engine system.

RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
Btw, about props in combat....
As you may or may not have noticed, master airscrew redesigned their props a little bit ago, with the new GF/3 series. But many of us don't like the new props as much as the old ones. But, since master airscrew knows that combat guys chew through far more props than usual, you CAN call master airscrew and get the good ole 9x4 GF/2 prop. I usually order a couple dozen at a time to get the shipping down. |
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
Things With Wings in Greeley stocks them in the 9 inch drawer

RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
I believe the Scharnell's stock them in CO. Frank usually brings a bag or two to the contests. Are you going to make Mile High Madness this weekend? I'm planning on making the trip with ssc and open B ready to rock.

RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
I have a gaggle of the older MAS 9 X 4's for $20 a dozen plus S&H if anybody needs some...
Regarding the new APC 9 X 3 Combat props, would my Jett BSE .25 over rev on one? I know Dub prefers we run a 9 X 5 on his .25's, but I have always run a 9 X 4. |
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
You might want to try the APC 9.3 x 3 on that screamin Jett first and see what it tachs before you bolt on the 9 x 3.
I am running the OSFX with a Combat Can. I use the APC 9x3s here at mile high altitude. It seems to me that the MAS flexs and looses enough pitch angle that it looses it's bite on this thin air, the APC doesn't do this and pulls me through the turns better with general better speed overall. Last year at the NATs - whats that elevation, 500'? - the fat air slowed my prop speed down and my speed overall. I went back to the MAS which gave me my rpm back along with the speed. I have no radar gun or engineering degrees to support my logic but this is my observation and I am satisfied with my conclusions. r |
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
He may not have any degrees, but I once hear Yoda say, "Hodges yes, a force with which to be reckoned he is."
Then he whimpered a little and made me stand on my hands while reciting my ABC's. Oh I don't mean the upside down hand press thing, no, I had to STAND on my hands! They still hurt. |
RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
GROUCHO, Do you fly combat? We have been flying Open B ships every weekend for the last 4 weeks at Love-air. Come on out sometime. We usually go on Sunday morning.

RE: 9-3 APC Combat prop
APC also has a 9x3 N combat prop listed, apperently a narrow blade, possibly to turn up the rpm a little bit over the 9030 combat prop? Ive been running the 9x4 mas but im going to run some test before nats with the 9x3apc and see how i like those.
I run the 9x5 apc on my jett 30 , the 9x4 turned a few more rpm but seemed slower in the air. I believe that motor likes to be tuned to pull the prop at around 18k, to small and you get out of the range the pipe is tuned for... I flew it in open C last year, wicked fast... |
