Engine for SSC combat
 

I recently got a great deal on a Thunder Tiger GP-15 and was wondering if anyone has used one of these on an SSC combat plane. I am building a JK aerotech TA-152 and a P-51 and was wanting to know if this engine would work on one of these planes. I also have an OS LA 15 and a Royal 25 that I can use.

The Royal .25 would be the pick for a JKA kit. A .25 will really haul it around and a .15 will not quite cut the mustard. For an SSC engine the TT will work but is slightly less powerfull than the OS la .15 for SSC. Mine turns about 16800 on the Standard MA 8x3 prop if you bumop the nitro upto 30% you can get a nice 17400 out of it which is perfect. Your OS la .15 should turn the 8x3 to about that with 15%. The JKA kits do not have enough wing area to qualify for SSC. A scratchbuilt warbird or MiniChoker or Bandito would be good choices. Also the new Pirana kit from Down home RC is a great SSC plane.

I am thinking about cutting a new wing for the P-51 but don't know how long to make it. Someone on the rc cmbat web site suggsted about 50-51 inches. That sounds about right to make it legal for SSC. I am trying to get started in the SSC class. Combat is well etablished in the Tucson area. They have SSC combat at every contest that they hold. I got the JKA kit for a very good deal so thought that I would try to use it. I am not interested in scale combat at this time but wanted a plane that looks like a warbird for SSC.

My suggestion is to push it out to 58-60 inches. The larger the span the better they seem to fly. You are carring a minimium 2 1/2 lbs so a lighter wing loading is good. They seem to turn much better also. The best designs I have seen fly actually have 62-64" spans. It must have at least 400Sq " to legally qualify for SSC. Sounds good just cut you a new wing and go to town.

Wade glad to see a combat pilot from Arkansas. There are only 2 there that I know of and that is Daniel and Craig Vaught. I hope you try to drum up some combat pilots from your area you just can't have more fun with an RC plane than in combat. The Pirana has a 64" WS it is the same basic airframe as the open B kit it just uses a diffrent HDPE motor mount to compensate for the need for nose weight with the .15 engine. They fly really well as either a B or an A or SSC plane. Hey Chuck man we sure missed your Bar tending skills at Paris. Texas combat just wasn't the same without those 3 falldown Margaritas you make. Are you planning on the Richardson TX meet this month. I'll be there and I think AJ is going to come as well. Hope to see ya soon. Your A-Hole buddy up this way is flying again. I had to go to his house the other day and tell him if he didn't pay his dues he wasn't welcome back at the club. The Pres. didn't want to do it so I gladly payed him a visit. Kind of wish he wouldn't have payed. LOL.

Wade get on the wagon man. Seriously this is the most fun you can have standing up. I used to be a scratch golfer, hunt, fish, play about 4 other sports and now all that is history. I started this insanity about 1 year ago exactly. I haven't touched my golf clubs scince my first combat meet. I used to play golf 3-5 times a week. Now those Pings are just collecting dust. My Bass boat lays dormant in the driveway. There is so much adreniline in combat that I liken it to a drug addiction. My wife will whole hartily agree. Once you have put a good combat plane in the air and come back with streamers on the wings there will be no turning back. I have traveled upto 16 hours one way to fly this crazy stuff and have flown about 120 rounds of competitive combat in the last year. I just love this crap. Yeee HAAWWW. Enough talk I have to drive to Nebraska in the morning to fly some combat (6 1/2 hours each way) and it might rain. Who cares I can't miss an opportunity to fly combat.
