RE: Great Planes Combat Spitfire!

re power setup...

I would think that the Spitfire would fly, but would have poor performance and would have short flights due to battery capacity and power. Might run hot too? But if it costs only your time, then perhaps it's worth giving it a try?

I think there are two GP Spitfire models by the way - I looked at adding retracts to my model (still incomplete!) but only found re-modelling instructions for a similar, but larger model which was designed internally, for retracts (as far as I could tell / can recall).

** still would like to know if retracts can be fitted to smaller version - does not seem much space?! Youtube link above looks good but no advice, model info/specs, etc.

Anyone???

I bought my Spit several years ago, with engine, but decided to go electric... but it's still only 90% complete. It's a project for this summer (again)... along with a similarly aged, similarly incomplete, Extra with .52 glow. (A replacement for my foamie biplane will probably come first - and I think I want retracts on it... perhaps I nice Mustang... )

Best of luck.

RE: Great Planes Combat Spitfire!

sheridan005,

You're right, Ididn't think about temperatures and/or flight time and battery. But I did know it was not going to fly "as fast as with a .25 Rimfire". Maybe it's not even worth the try. I was just trying to get myself a new airframe for my model :)but my "e-Yak" flies great and is in great shape. Although I know that in the near future I will be getting my hands on one of those Spitfire and a .25 glow engine just to see what this little aircraft is capable of doing ;)

Thanks for your insight!!!

PS: About the E-flite retracts video above:Ithink that plane that they show on the video is the small Combat Spitfire (39"wingspan). The other Spitfire (which would be a .40-size model) would need the bigger/beeffier 25-46 electric retracts, and the video clearly says they are the 10-15 retracts :) But yeah, it would be great to see a mod thread to see how he fitted the retract servos onto the wing of this little Spitfire.

Hi Guys,
I built and have flown my GP Combat Spitfire for the first time this past week end. I powered mine with a T.T. Pro .28, Xoar 10x4 wood prop, w/metal spinner and a total weight of 2 lbs 14 oz. ready to fly. Two HS 85 BB servo's in the wings, two HS225 BB for elevator and rudder, and a Airtronics 94091 on the throttle. I installed the engine inverted and opened up the battery hole in the firewall, and under the fuel tank for added cooling (I did plug up the access holes to the inner fuselage). I used the book figures for the CG (needed to add 1.5 oz. of lead in the tail) and set my control throws per manual.

The first take off was a no brainer and smooth, with excellent control-I did add a controllable tail wheel, so I was able to taxi out the do a scale take off. The flight response was excellent and I felt very comfortable with the model, and for to me, she was a sweet heart in the air. Very predictable and no snap outs with high speed turns and pull ups. My first landing was smooth and easy. My real surprise was the power of the Thunder Tiger .28...Wow very nice. This engine pulled the model vertical with a vengeance and was very fast. She will be a good combat model for me and looking forward to more flights.

I only wish I had added retracts to the model...

Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui
