SSC Shot Down
I've been scouring the regular combat forums lately, and I'm surprised that nobody's said a word about this... The AMA combat contest commitee has voted against adding SSC as a legitimate combat class.
One of the guys I fly combat with in the club was on that contest commitee, and he says that the general feeling was that SSC "wasn't developed enough??" I guess it'll be another three years before it comes up for vote again. |

Cute title, Does it really matter? No. There's NPS for SSC and there's are more pilots listed in SSC NPS then Open A and 2610 combined! And there are already at least twice as many folks flying SSC as 2610 that aren't even RCCA members. Even if SSC is only provisional it's clearly becoming the class of choose for a lot of people. We have two events a month for the entire summer with SSC. With at least 12 events this year that have SSC. The AMA accepting or not accepting proposals concerning some aspect of SSC will have little effect on SSC's popularity around here! :D

I'm on the Contest Board also and I think it is a very good thing that SSC was dropped for now. It is very very difficult to get anything changed once it is in the AMA rulebook and we want to be sure to get it right the first time! As was stated in the last post there is very little advantage to getting it in the rulebook right now and we need the time to continue developement!

I hear you Mike and raise you one Roy.
I can agree that getting it right the first time is the way to go. The good news bad news is that it will take for ever to change it when it is in the system. Here is where the raise one Roy comes in, as Roy was so nicely saying and I am not inclined to be as PC: The bad news is that it takes so long because that folks (loosley) at AMA are not apparently in touch with what is really happening since they can only see the field in EEERRRR I will get of the soapbox here, anyway you get the point. I will give it a rest and see y'all at an SSC event soon. |

MKirsh,
I was involved with the creation of the SSC Class and the rules known as the Five Commandments. Also, like Mike, I am a member of the AMA Combat Contest Committee. There were three proposals for SSC to become a "Rule Book" event for the year beginning 2005. You can see the rules proposals at www.georgiacombat.com. The deadline for submitting rules proposals to the AMA was September 30th, 2002, fully four months before we flew the first SSC contest by the provisional rules. It was too early to put it into the rule book by the rules of the time that had not yet been tested and evaluated. The good news is that the rules are working very well. Technology has a way or progressing further than anyone expected and it will be the same in SSC. If we are going to keep it slow and survivable we will need a couple of years of flying it to make sure we are doing it right. Within the RCCA Provsional Rules cycle we will make adjustments in July of 2003 if needed and the RCCA board will vote to continue its provisional status for 2004 or make it a full RCCA class. I expect that by the end of this contest season it will be the most popular, judged by number of entrants RC Combat class. Here is a photo of one of my latest SSC planes. It is a warbird (not scale but semi scale) from the Lee Liddle P39 kit: http://www.georgiacombat.com/LLP39FrontView.jpg |
