gremlin scratch build
 

Well, I just got back into flying again and came across the gremlin as a plane I could scratch build for a very low cost. 4 years ago when i was getting into combat we used wiffle ball bats and a six foot wing, but now I want to try the flying wing gremlin. My question is does any one know what degree the washout is in the wingtip? I have got my cutting table complete and a great deal on 20 sheets of 2'x8' x 2" at $1.00 a piece. and bought one downspout. I am ready to cut some cores but don't quite know how to do the wash out. if I try to keep the wing tops level then the washout brings the trailing edge of the outer wingtip up flush with the top of the root template. Is this correct? If I don't bring it up this much then the leading edge will not be straight across the entire wingspan.

If any body has any instruction on this please let me know.

The Gremlins I built had NO washout..........didn't need it. The only thing I did different was to round out the leading edge a bit....made them a lot less pitchy!!

So with no washout did your leading edge look like the picture with the leading edge a slight V and the top of the wing flat or did you hold the leading edge straight and have the top of the wing a slight downward V?

This would be the flat leading edge and tapered top.

Neither one...........I created a center line rib template, and wing tip template at full symetrical airfoil, with taper to the tip. After cutting out the wing panels and joining them together, I slightly rounded the leading edge.

When it's finished, it look like your typical Extra or Cap wing.

Very smooth..and with a 46 FX, very fast!!!:D

Don't know here, but when I helped cut cores here in kc we always set it up so that you would have a flat top of the wing with a tapered up bottom, essentially dihedral. Washout is a twisting of the wingtips and I think that's what you were implying, but we built ours straight. I'm flying SPAD's now and swapped from Gremmys to SPADs after my last midair snowshower. You can build a Sickle (gremmy style wing) or a Flipper(inverted with some change which really isn't a combat-able ship) for a fraction of the work/cost.

However, it still doesn't change my wishes for nice 25 powered Gremlin, or one with a 36 which was monster power and still pretty light.

You need to setup as per your second picture, otherwise the leading edge wont go straight across and will have a slight Vee to it.

As for flying.... It's a Gremlin and is not going to make much difference.

BTW what foil did you use or did you trace it off the plans?

You heard about Sheepy? He passed away back in December from diabetes complications of sorts.... really bad news. He and his son Zack had visited us for some combat a few years back.
