I was thinking 20 turns, is that good? If it is I might buy the Yokomo, because I have all the electronics I will need.

Also, do drift cars need a real smooth surface, or will they work in like a neighborhood street?

I tried both a 20 and an 11. The 11 is good if you can control the car enough to put it into the drift. If you cant handle the car enough to let it go straight a bit to build up the momentum before actually putting it into a drift, or whatever your using on the tires to make it drift slides very easily without going fast at all, you might wanna consider using a higher turn motor like the 20 turn. I use both, and both have their advantages. I tend to use 20 turns when using Yokomo drift tires, for the reason that I felt using a lower turn motor would wear the rings out MUCH quicker since its spinning the wheels faster. However, I think I will be using 11 turns for the PVC pipe tires. Hope this helps.

Anyone know what kind of surface would be good to drift on? Would just regular pavement be ok?

Yea, you should be able to drift just fine on pavement, especially if your using ABS, PVC, or yokomo drift rings.
