Locking the Rear Diff?

ok i just got my first rc car its a sprint 2 drift sport... i was wondering i keep hearing ppl say to lock the rear diff.... what does that do? and how would i go about doing this?

I just got a sprint 2 drift nd started tuning on it. I recomend a front 1-way diff. this will make drifts more consistant and easier to control. I also filled the rear diff with putty or clay to tighen it up. with this setup, the car is awesome. in the future, i'll probly put a tightened rear diff in. hope this helps
oh, and a locked diff or spool in the rear helps the back kick out and gives more control in a turn
