Drifting/rally

Hey I'm new to the world of RC drifting and was looking for some advice. I mainly would be using it for rallycross style racing and was wondering what I should look for in terms of dust/grit proof kits since ill be using a dirt track majority of the time. The only one I have come across is the yokomo drift package type-c due to its dustproof drivetrain. So my question is pretty much are there any other kits that provide dustproof? Any help would be much appreciated

RE: Drifting/rally

Rallycross and drift will require two cars setup totally differently unfortunately.<div>
</div><div>Drifters require hard suspension, slow motors and locked differentials, rallycross requires the precise opposite.</div><div>
</div><div>Its a bit of a stretch to say that the yokomo is better than anyother because of its 'dustproof' drivetrain. Only belt driven 4wd systems need to worry about dust and dirt. Shaft drive cars are inherently unaffected by dirt and dust and small stones entering the chassis area.</div><div>
</div><div>I would suggest looking at the Kyosho DRX for your rallycross needs, and the Yokomo for your drifting needs. There is also the HPI WR8 which is a good rally car, and has 3 differentials (center differential will be beneficial in rallycross).</div><div>
</div><div>The other altrnative is to go to a 1/8th GT car, which can be setup for rallycross, and will drift anywhere due to the power of the electric systems they use. Something like the Kyosho Inferno GT2 VE, but 1/8th is a serious step up in performance and cost compared to the 1/10th or 1/9th (DRX and WR8 are pretty much 1/9th).</div>

RE: Drifting/rally

oh ok, that makes perfect sense. after doing some more research I kind of noticed ill have to have go with one or the other. I was worried about running it on dirt and or gravel thinking it would really mess with the mechanics but its good to know its not as big of a deal with shaft driven. for rallycross what should I be looking for motor and ESC wise? high turn low wind? I am new to all of this and still trying to wrap my head around everything. only with time. I will for sure check out those other models and also see what my local shop has to offer as well. im excited to get into this hobby, just looking for a rig that will be a little versatile and lots of customizability/upgrades. thanks for the help I really appreciate it.

The HPI WR8 is exactly what you are looking for I think. Its quite expensive, but it has a good set of electronics in it. Check it out on youtube. If that's not what you're looking for I can come up with others...

I checked it out and it's awesome, a little pricy tho. I'm looking for a kit that I can assemble so it doesn't even have to be a RTR. I was also looking at the hpi e10 and the tamiya tt01. Thoughts on either one?

RE: Drifting/rally

They're ok for the money, but almost zero off road capability, even the ones that say they are 'rally', the scale and length of the arms just doesn't allow for enough suspension travel for them to work properly on anything but a dusty car park.<div></div><div>The fact you want a kit also adds to the complications, as pretty much any kit, when finished, will cost as much or more than the WR8. You'll have to choose between budget and building.</div><div></div><div>Have you considered a short course? The Durango DESC10R is on special sale right now at Tower....</div><div></div><div>http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...XCBXS&amp;P=ML</div><div></div><div>Use this electric set (Castle Sidewinder SCT with 1410 3800kv motor)...you can't get better for the money...</div><div></div><div>http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...XAETT&amp;P=ML</div><div></div><div>This servo, the Hitec 645MG, again as cheap an option as you can get by with (if you can afford better for a servo, tell me, as this one is a good and reliable workhorse, but quite slow)...</div><div></div><div>http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...XUZ89&amp;P=ML</div><div></div><div>And lastly, a radio, the Futaba 3PRKA, 3ch, 2.4Ghz interference free. This is great quality with the important adjustments for a great price...</div><div></div><div>http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...XAVSY&amp;P=ML</div><div></div><div>Now you still need a battery and charger, I'd suggest any 5000mAh hard case SADDLE PACK (this means the battery is in two halves and is a required configuration for this truck, this is theonly thing that goes against it, as the majority of cars take a different configuration)2S lipo from Hobbypartz.com and a Thunder AC6 charger from the same store. I don't think you can really get up and running with high quality stuff for cheaper than that. All that stuff I linked is from reputable good quality brands as well.</div><div></div><div>That order totals about $410, so entitles you to the $50 off discount code 010T5 (that's zero-one-zero). That is an excellent setup for $360ish, in anyone's book, and will make a great rallycross truck.

Alternatively, and the caveat here is that you won't get to build it, it's an ARR (Almost Ready to Run) also known as a rolling chassis, about 80% built....the Nexx10SC, which is just a STEAL at $99, I paid $239 for mine a few years ago. They must be having a warehouse clearout...

They won't last long at that price, so make a decision quick if you can live without building it (though it is recommended to at least partially disassemble and reassemble some of it before running, particularly, to add oil tot he differentials which will be empty and to add blue loctite threadlock to any metal-to-metal fasteners). Buy the exact same ancillaries that I linked above, only you can buy a 3S stick type lipo battery for this truck, for insane speed (you may want to start off with a 2S hard pack til you get the hang of it, 3S is very very fast). Without the truck in the order, the total becomes about $210 for the ancillaries at Tower, so then the discount code 010T3 comes into play for $25 off.<br type="_moz" /></div>
