Explain how to make ABS tires please!
I'm going to buy a TT-01D soon with aluminum driveshaft and some other goodies. I want to make my own ABS plastic drift tires. I've searched around here but I haven't found a solid explanation of it.
Can I walk into Lowe's/Home Depot and find the ABS pipe? What dimensions does it need to be (inner diameter, outer diamter)? Step by step, explain how to fit the ABS to my stock wheels. Is it hard to fit the wheel into the pipe or is it loose and requires something to 'fill' the gap (electric tape?)? Any other tips/tricks/pointers would be gladly appreciated! Thanks |
RE: Explain how to make ABS tires please!
Ok you want 2 in pipe. Measure it into sections that you want to fit on your rim. Then simply tape up the middle of the rim till the abs fits on snug. Seems how alot of people are asking questions about this i will post up a how to.

Is that 2 inch inner diamter abs? And is this something that Lowe's/Home Depot will likely have? Where does the whole 'boiling/baking your rims and pounding them with a mallet into the piping' part come in? Because I have seen some people mention heating stuff and other things like that.

Yes, 2" ID pipe. I've personally never had to heat the pipes to get them to fit my wheels.

Yeah 2 inch inner diamter and you should be able to pick it up at your local hardware store or plumbing supply place. You might have to boil them but I have never run into this problem. But I have only used HPI, Team ae, and kawada rims.

RE: Explain how to make ABS tires please!
I bought a 10 foot length of 2" inner diameter ABS at ACE hardware for $7.00. At first I used a hacksaw to cut the pipe but I would always cut crooked and the cuts were rough. I borrowed a friends pipe cutter, measured out the width I wanted and started cutting. Made 50 tires in about an hour and the cuts were smooth. Still got about 5 feet of pipe left. I just put the tires in hot water for a few minutes and it made putting the tire on the rim easier, when it cools down its pretty tight dont even need to glue it. And I just found a few feet of PVC behind my house, gonna get started on that and see how it works.

When using irrigation pipe for tires,
ABS and Polyetylene (PE) FTW!!![sm=thumbup.gif] PVC FTL!!![sm=thumbdown.gif] I dunno why people heat their ABS. Unless you're using Traxxas mesh wheels, they'll fit all (I've put them on HPI, Tamiya, Kawada, Yokomo, Speed Mind, Hot Works, Pro-Line, Schumacher, and others) 1:10 scale touring car wheels without the aid of anything other than electric tape, my foot, and a hardcovered book (to protect my foot). I really dunno where you get your ABS. I've bought ABS from California AND Wyoming, and I've never EVER had a problem fitting them to my wheels. |
RE: Explain how to make ABS tires please!
thanks for the replies. my local lowe's is 150 yards away from my local home depot, so the search for 2 inch ID ABS pipe shouldn't take long.
but first, i guess i should order the car  |
