RC Drifting popular???

Hey Guys,

I've been RCing for a few years now...All off Road trucks. Recently I've heard about RC Car Drifting. Is this getting really popular? I live in San Diego, CA and haven't heard about it until a few weeks ago.

Any recommendations of good RTR packages for drifting? Let me know. Thanks!

I'm thinking electric, since generally they're cheaper and its more instant gratification. Don't have to worry tuning or anything. Both my off road trucks are Nitro. I'd like to try somethin different.

depends what your LHS stocks but if u want real cheap the TT01R from tamiya
after that things like TA05 from tamiya are a bit more pricy but alot smother.
Then either make some drift wheels out of alkathene pipe or buy somethink like
yokomo single rings

its like a good but obscure movie. sure its popular... to certain people, and some people just don't know about it and its usually more people don't know about it than know about it. only reason people think its popular is because the person who is interested in it tells his friends and finds forums about it so they surround themselves with it. "what, youve never seen ____? man, its the best movie ever. its so good. i can't believe you've never seen ____ before. do you live under a rock?" i'm sure we've all had conversations similar to this.

The sprint 2 drift or this TT-01 depending on how much you want to spend are nice. For the TT-01 You would still want oil shocks and ball bearings, so add $30 or so. This is a great deal, especially if you use a coupon like the ending very soon, the 20 off 125 that ends after the 31st and there is a 25 off 125 floating around. That's a great deal if you ask me. You can get going for under $150.

I started with xmods. My cousin and I were bored one summer in 2005, and we went and bought xmods. We were playing with it outside and they were fast for us since it was our first r/c's. We saw sand and decided to drift in it. It drifted well! so I decided to come up with something to make it slide better. I put electric tape on the wheels and it slid better, but since it was 2wd it was unpredictable. So we tried other things on the car and when we bought the AWD kit, it slides way better! After owning them over a year, I moved up with 1/10. I didn't know they had this forum back then. I never looked.

Well I guess since I have been around r/c and drifting for so many years it's kinda gotten boring. Put it this way I use to "drift" with my Tamiya Frog and Grasshopper (84-85) on the street.

Amen!!!!!!!
But I 100% agree with you Joe, drifting has gotten lame and boring.

RE: RC Drifting popular???

Drifting is growing ever more popular in BOTH scales. Both are getting more exposure. It still isn't what I'd call mainstream, but you'd have to live under a rock to never have heard of it.

As far as RTR kits, you have a few to choose from. It all depends on your $$$. The cheapest is probably a TT01 OR TL01 kit from Tamiya. Then, you could move up to Sprint 2. If you want the best, you'll pay best $$$. That's Yokomo. You can get an RTR kit from them from the 350-600 range depending on which MR4TC chassis you buy. The downside is the price. The upside is a) it's the best out there (proven in competition) b) you don't have to hop-up anything unless you so choose to do so.

Being in "the Day-go" your choices are pretty limitless.f Pretty much any chassis you choose to go with will have LHS support or support within a reasonable radius. someone else already recommended groovydrift.com. I'd just reiterate that you check those guys out. I'm SURE there's already quite a few drifters in your area and they're all pretty cool.

It's like anything else. Either you like it or you don't. I've been into drifting since about 98 and have yet to get bored with it. But, some people just aren't into it.

RE: RC Drifting popular???

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it.

Just based on price, I think I'll probably go with the TT01. That way the wife will have a better chance accepting it. LOL I have seen a drifting package from HPI racing that looks good too.

Are there a lot of hop ups for the TT01? Also, is it used a lot for competition?

RE: RC Drifting popular???

There are plenty of hop-ups for the TT01. 2 or 3 people may use it in competition, but no one ever wins with it. A fully hopped up TT01 is still not as good as some other stock chassis out there. It's a begginner's package, plain and simple. It's not really built to be GREAT.

RE: RC Drifting popular???

cant go wrong with the TT-01 m8 you wont be dissapointed trust [8D]
and it may be a beginners package but the better you control it the better the drifter bad workman blame there tools :D

Neon_guy 04-01-2007 07:09 PM

RE: RC Drifting popular???

LOL. Yeah. That sounds good on paper. I mean, under THAT logic, don't hop-up the TT01 at all. That way you'll be the BEST. Whatever floats yer boat.

RE: RC Drifting popular???

get your self a nitro tc3 plus but on some drifting tires and drift. nitro has its pluses in drifting. first off looks cool having to see a real engine, drifting gives you some respect for those who drift real cars like my self. none the less its alot easier to drift with electric that is true. but nitro is funner because its harder. the balancing is not a problem on such a small scale i havent notes any defernt between my friends electr cars and my nitro tc3 plus. didnt you say that you already have nitro wouldnt it be best to stay with nitro sense you already have much of the supplies you would need such as glows fuel ect. just my 2 cents..

theace18 04-02-2007 11:41 AM

RE: RC Drifting popular???

Yeah I've seen those Nitro-Powered cars. they look nice. I have two Nitro Powered trucks right now. They rad, but they are a pain in the ass. You gotta tune it everytime, a lot of after-run clean up, etc. etc. etc. I just want something nice and easy. Dunno if I'll do competition or not, so I don't think I need something super expensive.

RE: RC Drifting popular???

A nitro drifter doesn't get you MORE respect with REAL drifters. Seeing as how all the REAL drifters (by REAL, I mean D1 drivers and Formula D professional drivers) drift electric, they'll just look at you funny. And us amateurs will just drift tight precise circles around you with our electric cars. Hoooooowever, Nitro will be louder...which is cool...i guess. And it's more work. So, yeah, that's cool. And, it's more expensive. Look at it like this. Nitro is like the 300zx of rc drifting. can it drift? YES. Can it drift well? Yes. Will many people use it? No cuz it's too much of a hassle. elec is like the 240sx of drift. Great balance to begin with. Great power to begin with. overall great car to begin with. You CAN drift with Nitro, but when there's a better more acceptable option, why would you. Unless of course you want to be one of the "cool outsiders who goes against the grain". That's all fine and good if that's your thing. It's not effecient or pratical, but it's not impossible either.

sajuuknightfall 04-02-2007 02:01 PM

RE: RC Drifting popular???

then go for electric then. in the end with upgrades such as batts and charge you will spend about the same amount of money. i used to be in electric i still have my xmod car lol broken but i still have pieces of it hehehe.

RE: RC Drifting popular???

no u won't. Continually buying gas will outwiegh the price of a one time purchase of batteries and charger. IT'S A FACT. [>:]

i like pants :D .... tt-01 is fine mate u dont sound like the sort of person who is goin to be enterign comps atm so yer ur sweet.
as for drifting being popular at brizdrift xmas meet we had a massive 50 drivers, plus psectators so around here thats more than double and racermeet or offroad meet so u tell me because im pretty sure the numbers say that drifting is far more popular than racing. i think this is because of the extreme seriousness that racers have put into it scaring off newbies that think they cant afford to race. i meen tyre warmers for a rc car sure it make a small difference but jesus. were as drifting is more a social thing wen comp and meets happen more fun, doesnt matter if u crash, u dont need the best gear etc.. my very experienced 2 cents in the matter
