More out of a Stampede XL5.
My Son is wanting a new motor for his Stampede, he thinks the XL5 is slowing down, although it still seems quick to me. What is the most common setup/upgrade everyone does with these? Is it worth it to upgrade? or move onto something else.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Probably best to move on to a new vehicle. Depending on how much money you want to spend maybe an E-Revo or something. The big ones come in brushless and non brushless flavors, and there is a 1/16 scale one that is really zippy as well. All are way better than the Rustler XL5.

If he is looking for speed look into the Mini E-Revo VXL. I love mine its a blast to drive. all you need to buy it the series connector and an extra battery pack. Or you could throw the VXL in the stampede

x2 on the MERV if you want to stay with Traxxas. Alternatively you could try out a number of different manufacturers.
With the XL5 motor, the Stampede is near its limits of performance until a giant pile of money is thrown at it. You could upgrade to a decent 19t brushed motor, but then you'll start chewing up diffs.

And thats why my username is crapxxas. You could get more speed out of an evader exb with a changed idler gear. All you would need is the optional metal idler gear.
Traxxas is aimed for bashers who want speed to fit needs, not for racing or speed runs.

I have a old Manual Speed Control. I went out the first time with my Velineon setup and chewed the idler in 2-3 seconds. Replace idler and diff with metal gears(9 dollars for both) and bashed for an hour plus no problem. For a basher i would keep it. Upgrade it and have fun. You can upgrade it alot cheaper than jumping into a new car. and sadly resale on stampedes are not good. so you wont get to much out of it if you sell it.

just have him (and you possibly) save up 135 bucks and get a VXL system. Best upgrade you can get, and if its the waterproof version then its already brushless ready. Otherwise just buy a new titan 550 for 20 bucks at your LHS. With the brushed XL-5 (really any system) you will have motors go out every month or two, but its up to you. Otherwise, get him a 1/16 Slash VXL for like 240 at Xmas or something. Any of these options would be great Xmas presents he would be guaranteed to love!

Huh? If its the older XL-5 it would only need a $4 steel idler gear to handle darn near any brushed motor. If it is the newer XL-5 with the metal geared tranny, you'd be hard pressed to hurt it with any standard 1/10 scale brushed or brushless motor.

Diffs are not that strong.

The aluminum idler gear is $4, the steel is $10-12. The aluminum one wears quickly.

They are the toughest differentials in a 1/10 scale 2wd truck IMO, with the HPI Blitz/Firestorm diff right there with it.

And the SC10's diff has not broken yet

RE: More out of a Stampede XL5.
Thanks for all the help with this. The hobby store in town has a Castle set up for $99 right now, the lady told me it is comparable to the Traxxas brushless set up that runs $165. I am not sure if the Castle one she mentioned is a sidewinder or not. We also run a 3300mah NIMH battery, I was thinking of switching to LIPO, how big of a LIPO can be put in with the Castle brushless system?
Also, it seems like it might be the safest bet to pick up an idler gear so I do not have to mess with the stock one breaking.

the VXL system is actually very similar to some of the Castle Creations systems, in fact it may be made by them but don't quote me. Don't forget the VXL system has the advantage of being waterproof, so no shorting out a $100 ESC by accidentally going through a puddle as would be the case with a Castle Creations. Lipo would make a huge difference on any brushless system.

Hmm. in the past 3 weeks...ThunderbirdJunkie has replaced 3 or 4 ''waterproof'' Traxxas servos and 3 of their ''waterproof'' speed controls because of driving in the snow. Just sayin'.

this year i decided to not run my nitros in snow for starting-the-engine-when-cold reason.
but i bought a 3905 e-maxx for snow. waterproof esc has also held up to alot of snow.(not a couple inches like some of you USA guys get)
heres a pic of our first snow fall(the thing on the right is a BBQ)
