Default How do I install a hardened diff gear on a Losi Speed-T?

In short, I've blown out the plastic diff gear twice and decided to get a Robinson Racing hardened aluminum diff gear. I accidentally purchased a ball-diff gear (which I don't know as much about, and don't have all the additional parts for), so I am going to get this:

My question is, how do I install it? Do I just put it in like normal and squeeze it between the outdrive shafts?

Currently, the plastic diff gear uses black plastic rings to help squeeze it together like this:

Are there additional rings I need to get before installing the metal gear? I just don't know if it's going to grip very well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

You don't.
You spend $30 on a Desert Truck transmission case and gear diff.

Is that compatible with the Speed-T?

Also, could you please provide a link? I threw it into Google, but didn't find anything specific.

Thanks

Get on Losi's site and look at the exploded parts view for the Desert Truck. If it wasn't compatible with the Speed T, why would ThunderbirdJunkie tell you to do it?

Touche, sir.

I looked up all the parts (transmission case + differential set +sealed BB rings for about $40.

Now I just need to figure out how to get my $15 back from this ball diff gear...

Thanks again.

EDIT: As much asI believe you, my only concern is that everywhere I have looked up this diff, it says nothing about being officially compatible with the Speed-T.

Bearings are the same, as long as the ones in your truck are in good shape, you're good to go.

As a matter of fact, I think they are in good shape. Nevermind that then.

See my edit though from my last post...

In your opinion, what needs more maintenance? The desert diff or the ball diff? I already have the gear and if I just get some diff balls, lube, new thrust balls, Icould probably put it together just fine.

Ok... this thread is a bit confusing. But you should still be able to make the ball diff gear work with the speed-t. The stock speed-t diff gear is actually a ball diff with locking rings that grip it where the diff balls pop in. You should still be able to use these plastic rings with the RRP gear.

Sorry about the confusion.

I bought that RRP gear with the intention of using the black locker rings to grip it, however those rings don't fit. In fact I broke the black rings into several pieces trying to force them into the holes on the gear. That's when I realized that only building a ball-diff out of it was going to work. The reason I came here is because I discovered the other gear that has no holes in it and is completely flat. I figured I needed that one instead. After talking about it here, I realized that all I needed are some diff balls and lube and Ican put it together myself. Otherwise I'd just be wasting money on this RRP gear with the holes in it. I've done a bunch of research since and watched vids of how to build them, so I am confident I can do it with what I have now.

Hope that clears some things up a bit more...

Good luck if this is your first time building a ball diff. They can be infuriating to get right. That being said, ThunderbirdJunkie had not the convenience and guidance of youtube videos to help, so you should be alright.

Haha well thanks

I just finished building my diff and Ithink I got it pretty well. I went to the hobby store, purchased carbide diff balls and a new set of thrust balls/washers, diff lube and black grease. I watched a pretty specific set of videos of how to put it together and got it working nicely (I think). I put plenty of lube where the balls went, but I could see how it gets infuriating trying to get it all together without dropping any. I had to tighten the screw down quite a bit so it wouldn't slip and burn up - this speed-T motor has a LOT of torque.

My main concern is setting the slipper clutch properly - I tried to set that too, but I don't think I can get that worked out until I actually take outside and drive it for a bit. For now I tightened it all the way down then loosened it about 3 turns.

Did you break in the diff yet?

If by breaking it in, you mean holding one wheel while giving it about 25%throttle then the other wheel, then yes I have.

I've done it several times back and forth - it's pretty smooth.

So I took it out tonight and beat on it (giggity) and it held up pretty well! It's a lot more "poppy", but not too bad. I took it on the street as well as through some grass and leaves to off-road it a bit. The plastic diff blew out last time on just grass when I was giving it too much throttle. I'm a little bit more wise as to how I"gun it" on the grass and other situations. I don't want to just burn it all up even though it's a MUCHstronger diff now.

My inexperience shows though because I really don't know if I need to tweak anything or not. I don't know how it's "supposed" to act.

I also don't know how to verify how well it held together other than to just take it apart again and see how it looks. I'm mostly worried about the ball diff itself with the lube. I don't want it wearing out already and burning up without me realizing it.

I already installed it in my car. Look up RRP9400 on google. I bought it off eBay Ithink for about $15.

I also bought carbide diff balls for it.
