Default I've got one ordered....

I have a nitro RC-10GT (share it with my son) for a while but moved overseas and can't get any fuel....for my son's 7th birthday I ordered him a Traxxas Rustler RTR w/Radio & ESC and two DuraTrax Shark 6-Cell 1500mAh Sport Standard batteries. I'm brand new to electric so I have no idea what ESC is (electronic speed control - throttle?) and I don't know about the batteries as far as how long they'll last (per charge and total life) and their quality in general.....any inputs would be appreciated.

I went through a few of the threads here and some of you had me almost sold on the stampede, but in the end I wanted a stadium truck.

The hardest part is going to be waiting for it to get here and then letting my son have it. []

The batts you got him will do fine for right now.Did you get him a peak charger.I have found a nice charger isnt something to cheap out on.Duratrax has some nice intelpeaks for cheap and work pretty good. Now as far as runtime on those sharks.Your looking at 4-5min tops with that stock stinger motor. Now for a ESC, if you got him the one with the MSC(Mechanical Speed Control) then your guna wana get him a new ESC.The diffrnece is the MSC uses a second servo to move a arm accross a little board controlling the power to the motor.A ESC doesnt use a second servo. It is a lot more efficiant and way better overall. As far as witch one to get.I would recomend one of the Duratrax intelspeed ESCs.There cheap and work pretty good. Now if you would like to get him a little something better I would go for a Novak XRS or Roster.Of you want some afforable batts that are very nice hit up www.boomboombatteries.com

If thats a little to much in price get him some Venmon 1800s or even some 2500s.

Hope this helps.

EDIT:I just noticed that you got him the one with the ESC with it.There pretty crappy ESCs but it will work.Use my suggestions for a upgrade idea

Yeah you won't get too much runtime with those batts but its more like 7-10mins because those batts put out low voltage and other stuff. And also Duratrax escs and chargers are good so yeah.

nonono, guys hes only got the stock stinger motor in there, they run with that stinger motor and a 1500 pack for atleast 11-13 minutes, yeah you should probably get the xrs because novak puts out great products and its affordfable to, mtroniks is another great brand of speedcontrol that has treated me well, plus they are water proof

Ok how much money do you plan on putting into this truck? I think one of the first upgrades should be rpm bearings carriers and then bearings for the front and rear. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXNY89&P=Z and http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXNY90&P=Z and some bearings http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXD121&P=V and you are going to need 8 total bearings for them. Then for upgrades I've heard many good things about the reedy quad mag 19t motor. It will work with the stock esc too so you dont have to upgrade it but its a welcome upgrade. Also boomboombatteries has some of the best deals on batteries out there and its a good price. Then theres always brushless if you dont want to worry about replacing brushes and comm. cuts.

Here ia a list of things that will make tha rustler a good truck.
1:[link=http://boomboombatteries.com]boomboombatteries.com[/link] for good batts.
2[link=http://duratrax.com/caraccys/dtxm1055.html#dtxm1070]esc[/link] for the esc. You would want to get either the 12t or the 8t.
3:[link=http://www.modelrectifier.com/products/batteryChargers/index.asp]charger[/link] get the 959 or the 969 DO NOT GET THE 819!
4:[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAVJ4&P=ML]motor[/link] this is a great motor.

NOOOOO Sir. I havent heard many good things about that charger and mainly about its overheating problem.
I had to choose which one I wanted between that one and the intellipeak pulse charger and Im happy with the pulse charger. I would go with the intellipeak here.

HaHa, thanks guys for all the input....I'll probably be keeping everything stock. I may upgrade the battery depending on the run time or the motor depending on the stock motor perfomance, but if it runs for 11-13 mins per charge at a decent speed then that'll be fine.

Yeah, he's only 7 (almost, b-day is sep 11) but he can drive pretty good. He's had plenty of practice with my RC10GT and my old neighbors Rustler.....

Here's the charger that I ordered: Tower Hobbies 400 AC/DC Auto Charger http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXJC33

I have a 959, HATE IT its not that weird, its just hard to get all to exsited about buying a charger... Now buying a pro4, or a brushless motor or a checkpoint motor, or aluminum parts for the pede, thats exsiting and fun. A new charger has been on my list since about 4 days after owning a 959. It still charges the cells, you just have to watch it closely and basicly turn it into a manual charger.

Thats a timed charger, (basicly like the hobbico one that I started out with) it will be a pretty bad charger, just warning you dont put any good cells on it, you will regret it.

I am pretty sure that it is a timed charger but with no timer...basically an internal 30 minute timer. I could be thinking of the wrong charger though...

Default RE: I've got one ordered....

We've had it for a little while now and have run about 40 charges total on the truck (2 batts X 20 charges each)......

1. I'm impressed with the durability......it's been through a few accidents and even through a puddle. The only thing that has happened is that the motor brace screw came loose and caused the drive gear to slip and it was not meshing with the spur gear. Easy 5 minute adjustment.

2. I was initialy disappointed with the battery run-time.....but they seem to hold a charge better after each charge. They now hold a charge for around 10-15 minutes.

3. The speed is pretty slow, but for a 7 year old it's fast enough.

4. My only real complaint is the tires. They are already wearing down and they didn't come with foams, also they weren't even glued to the rims.

Tires arn't really cheap, so make sure you buy tires that are good for your needs. The tires and rims I gave links to will fit the rustler. If you and your son dont run your truck much on the road, these tires will be good, they are very good all-round tires. Most Proline tures (including Gladiators and Edges) come with foam inserts. They will just need to have the bearing added to the front, and have the tires glued onto rims. Have fun with your rustler.
