Dark Impact - Lunchboxer style..

RE: Dark Impact - Lunchboxer style..
After I installed the front gearbox, I feel there's too much play for the center drive shaft.. so I bust out my standard Tamiya trick -> put some soft rubber o-ring in the drive cups.. take away 90% of the play...

Thanks! Glad that someone finds it useful!
Yeah, I am putting o-rings on a lot of places... it takes out slop on ball connectors too!

Moved the brushless set over to the DI? Good choice, the lunchbox doesn't do the brushless justice...
The DI is going to be an absolute blast to drive with the brushless motor!

There is some diff foams left over (one has to be cut in half), i used those in the center drive shaft.
Any chance of a vid with the brushless in it?

Yeah, figured the DI can take the power better.. (instead of always flipping over, etc.) Should be fun......
Besides, I got a set of Mamba Max 7700kv coming in.. can always put that on the 'Box again.............

Tight fit on the Neo due to the solidering tab direction.. I put some wire in to minimize the bending..
Tie up all wires, everything is neat and won't touch moving parts.. (I know it looks kind of like a mess, but actually in person it looks pretty good.. :P) The fan set is still blowing the ESC, but I might need to figure out a way to cool the motor.. maybe got to mount a heatsink to the motor plate.. or something..
Also, stock servo saver got to go.. too much slop... unfortunately my Kimbrough one that I have as a spare is for metal gear only... argh!!

Sadly i dont think those wires are gunna be there once the body is on, they will need to be squashed down if it is possible. Theres about 40mm max (i measured the height depth there, not sure if you'll be able to have those wires there. The body has about 38 or something mm, and my reciever is 36mm, and i cannot fit motor wires there. (servo wires is poss though)
For cooling motor like you say, i think the tamiya heatsinks are more bling than function. I know one guy has mounted the body using velcro, so he could remove the rear body post to fit a 40mm fan it there.

Yeah, we will see! I will trim up the body tonight and test fit it.. all those wires are tied down already, so hopefully it just "looks" messy in the pics.. I am hoping the body will clear it or push it down (which is okay) and make it flush..
Yeah, I wonder if I should just make some ducting to direct some air into the motor area... or I should be running 2 fans.. ha ha! (1 is on the ESC already!)
Or simply re-gear the motor so the load is not too high.. current, it is running on 82T spur and 26T pinion...
Might need to get a new pinion...

Time to join the club, man!! DI should be a good little buggy! You can also check it out at R/C Car Action magazine.. they did a review last month, I think.. (the one w/ Baja 5B on the cover)

Dammit, I am soon going to have more cars than I can fit in my sig. In fact, I have only one letter left. LOL

Sure, but it is up to you to read whatever materials then decide yourself, I guess.. just like all the car magazines too...
For me, I am a non-racer, so it is not an issue.. Tamiya has always been pretty durable to me.. (although I don't do anything crazy w/ my RCs!) and as long as it can take the brushless power and let me bash around it.. that's good enough.. hee hee!
Eventually, I'd like to try some other brands, I guess, but I think I have the most fun building Tamiya kits.. !!
On my lineup, I think I need to get a 2WD stadium truck... maybe the XXX-T MF... as one of the projects down the road.. ha ha!

Decision time: Do people put grease on the spur / pinion?? I mean, it is gonna be enclosed with the cover, so I guess it is okay to put some grease.. But there is also a slipper clutch there.. you don't want to get grease on the slipper pads..
I am leaning toward no grease.... what do you all think?

RE: Dark Impact - Lunchboxer style..
Alright.. no grease it is!
I never have a more "race oriented" vehicle before, so.... most of the Tamiya kits have those enclosed transmission so you just grease it up really good.. (and usually last the life time of the vehicle!)
Might need to look into pinion option for the DI.. the stock one is 26T.. I think the Neo 1-Star can pull it off.. (as the slipper clutch comes with the 82T spur already, which is up from the 78T standard size..)
When I talk to LRP, they said they typically gear the 1-Star w/ the standard 27 turn motor gearing.. (even though it puts out power like a 12-13T motor, probably due to the strong torque) It also pulls my Lunchbox just fine with standard gearing.. BUT, I had a heatsink on the motor w/ Lunchbox, and now we are talking about 4WD traction.. I don't want to overheat the motor, so... might get a 24T pinion... are they even out yet?!
