originally it was going to be brushless... but i am going to put that in an off road car,
reverse would be nice, but not mandatory....

the mm is a great choice since it can run both brushed and brushless motors, and has tons of options. Its also decently inexpensive... $120-140 depending on where you get them. A good brushed only esc will run you around $80-90, so spend the extra money and get the MM.

It all depends on what you're looking to do. You say racing, but what class, what motor and how much are you looking to spend? I've been using a Duratrax Streak which can handle down to 14 turns. It doesn't have reverse but since it's only $40 and was meant for budget racing (where reverse is rarely allowed) it was a good deal IMHO.
