Default Stampede ESC smells like its burning and gets hot??

A few months ago my kids were playing with their stampede truck and they ran it through some wet grass. The truck stopped working. I put it to the side and let it sit until today when I decided to charge a battery and give it a try. It started to move just fine but then I noticed something started to smell like it was burning and the ESC got really warm. Any of you have any suggestions on what the problem might be? Would the problem be in the ESC or the Motor and what would I need to do to fix it? Thank you in advance for your help.

Well it wouldn't do that even if it got submerged in water, it sounds like you have a short somewhere.
