RE: a123 batts
From what I hear they are almost indistructable. Supposidly they can charge at high amps, discharge and high amps, and are very safe. They also supposidly put out more power then the standard NiMh. They sounds SWEET.

RE: a123 batts
These batts are little monsters. I overheated them to 190F and nothing happend. They still charge fine and put out some major amperage. They make Nimh cry for their mama's. The downside of them are their size. I have used them over a year and they perform just like new. The only batts I use in my Rustler dragster.

RE: a123 batts
here's some in my emaxx.
if you're running stock electronics, you may want to try to getting 8cells and making a pair of 2s2p. that will be less voltage than 6cell nimh, but they should be lighter, and amperage output will be much better. in the end you will probably get better run times more power off the line and possibly faster. this setup would yeild 13.2v's and be 4300mah with more amperage output than you can pull from them.

RE: a123 batts
I take it these are different than the 123a lithium batteries I use for the alarm systems I work on? Because they are only like $6 a cell.

I just looked at them and they say cr123a lithium on them, I don't think these are rechargable but they look to be similar, even though mine say duracel and energizer on them.

[link=http://www.slkelectronics.com/lipodapter/index.htm]This[/link] will allow you to charge a123 cells. I'm not sure what kind of cut-off they need.

A123 cells are 3.3v nominal, 3.6v fully charged. Though they aren't drastically harmed if they are charged above 3.6.

RE: a123 batts
A Dewalt 33V pack has 10 cells in it for around 70$ (if you shop around). So for under 80 bucks you could build 2 4600 mah 2S2P AND 1 2300mah 2S1P pack. Try getting 3 Lipo or Nimh packs for 80 bucks.
