Upgrading an old old Traxxas Rustler
so i want to upgrade my old Rustler. This truck is over 10 years old and losing it's pep a bit. i was thinking about getting an XL-5 ESC and maybe a Titan 550 12T motor. my question is what else would i need? this truck does not have a slipper clutch (yes it's that old) would i need one? also what kind of gearing changes would i need to do? i believe it has an 18 tooth pinion and a 32pitch 72 tooth spur. would i also need to upgrade the tranny with all steel gears? i was wanting to convert it to brushless but i did the math and it would be better to just buy the brushless version of this truck. i don't want to dump a ton of money in it just update it some.
any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: Upgrading an old old Traxxas Rustler
no u dont need a slipper but the trouble is that all new generation spurs use one and the new gens are stronger[&:]
so yes a slipper needed.
go ultimate on this project if you want it to last...like take a while before re-builds...
RPM castor blocks and bb carriers (eventually upgrade to all RPM parts)
ally belcranks (NOT inTERDy!!)
all steel tranny gears with 5x11 bb's (you may need a new tranny case for this...i'm not sure)
VXL stub axles + jato driveshafts + traxxas WHITE output yokes = indestructable driveshafts, use the jato U-joints as they dont ware out like the VXL ones do. use a drill press to enliarge the hole in the stubs and out put yokes to make the u-joints fit.
then that'll make it INDESTRUCTABLE for any brushed setup and pretty dam good for brushless too.
after you save up again after upgrading to "modded VXL spec" (i herby claim this term as my own) get a mamba max and velineon motor and a zippy 3s lipo.
wheelie bar..traxxas one. although weak it's kinda the best one out there[&:] i modded mine so it didnt pop outa place all the time and also got 3 lives from mine.
and just for coolness...get a kyosho DST wing mount and a proline buggy wing.
makes it perform better in the air and is ultra cool
have fun

THANK YOU GUYS! For both asking the question and replying. I'm doing the same to my 5 year old Rustler and well, now I know exactly what to do!
