Default Choosing a nice peak charger?

Hey guys,

I am ordering a few new things for the rusty, and i want a nice new PEAK charger, as i have an oldschool timer one atm. I really don't know what to look for, but it needs to be peak and able to charge nimh. Not to expensive, but not cheap either.. please post links/suggestions.

Thanks!!

The I.C.E. from duratrax is a great charger. It'll charge almost ANYTHING, and it's got a reasonable price tag too.

The Duratrax Piranha AC/DC or superbrian 960 would do good.

The ICE is a GREAt charger, but costs over $120 and needs a power supply.

The more I use my Onyx 230, the more I like it. It charges nimh, lipos and even A123 batteries. It's AC/DC so you don't have to worry about a power supply, and it's small and compact. It has ten settings so you can set it up for the different batteries that you may have. It doesn't have a balancer, but it only costs $80.

Ok, it sounds like it could be the onyx for now, 80 bucks wont hurt me too bad, and it looks like it has nice features.. Any more suggestions before i make the decision?

I vote for the turnigy accucel 6. I love mine and haven't had a moment's problem out of it. it balances, and does up to 6s lipo and 15 cell nimh/nicad, has a backlit display, discharges and cycles etc. Costs 40 something bucks shipped can't beat that with a stick.

Try a Triton JR or one of the many clones.

The accucell-6 is really catching my attention. From what i can see it has awesome reviews.. seems great! So, for now that is my choice.. but i do have one more question. I see that this takes a banana plug to the connection of your choice. Where can i browse a selection of banana plug connectors? I need a banana plug to male for my VXL plugs, but i cant seem to find one (actually i did on tower, but its out of stock.) Any place where i can order that? A link would be great.. i'll search in the mean time.. Thanks guys!!

I too charge the traxxas packs with my accucel. The accucel comes with a good many charging leads but they don't come with a traxxas or even a molex (tamiya) style. It comes with a deans one, a alligator clips, few diff ones for tx/rx and a nitro glow plug starter. What I did is that I have a traxxas to tamiya adapter, and then I have a male tamiya that I got off a wall wart charger or something, with just the bare wire ends sticking out. The accucel does comes with a alligator type clip on it so you can just hook those right onto the wires. I don't know about r/c planet though so can't help you there, but the accucel is for sure a great deal. I have run mine day and night for a week solid at a time before with no issues.

That accucel looks like a really good charger, lots of bells & whistles!
Its dc so youll need a power supply too! It says it gives voltage readings on each cell....
can anyone verify this that has one ? (sounds good)

Yeah but hobby city has a 9.99 power supply like for a laptop that I bought and it works great! Small and doesn't take up alot of room. All I have charged so far with mine has been nimh and nicad so not sure on the voltage thing.

I would go with the accucel also. They are great chargers from what I hear. I am gonna order one soon to replace my duratrax piranha which I paid more money for and doesn't have nearly as many features. Heck, it can't even charging a lipo.[:@]

I saw several of you mention the Onyx 230, which I'm and contemplating purchasing, but I wanted to get some real world feedback on it. I searched the forums and no one really discusses it or gave a review. I was considering the ICE as well but after doing some research, I learned the Team Checkpoint TC1030 uses the same case, though it has higher charge and discharge rates but still operates only on DC power. The Onyx seams like a tough deal to beat considering my primary driving is bashing with sport NiMh packs, possibly LiPo someday. Any suggestions?

I don't think you can go wrong with the Onyx 230 either. Lot of bang for the buck. Even a lot of racers at the local tracks I've been to have them. However, I just scored a TC1030 from Tower for $130 minus a discount code (about $110...). Score! The price went up to $155 now...

I am glad to hear they are a trustable site, and in the future i will most likely order from them if i find something there. But now, my plans have changed (again) and i am going to be needing the banana plugs to male deans ultra connection, which WAS available on Tower. So far this is what i am getting so far:

- Turnigy Accucel 6 Charger
- Power Supply for The Charger
- 7 cell sxs EnerG cell battery from Promatchracing.com (anyone order a battery from them?)
- Some bearings (I still have bushings, wheels are wobbly)
- Banana Plugs to Deans Ultra Male charge lead
- Sidewinder ESC that i will use with my VXL motor

Sound good? ;D
