spektrum s6030

Soooooo I bought a spektrum s6030 servo for my wraith. The hitec 645mg stalls out when trying to turn the wheels :p granted the tires are rc4wd Baja claws and I have 3oz of weight in each wheel and the tires r like almost 6in tall. So I'm hoping this servo has the balls to turn my wheels lol.
Also I have a castle mamba max pro powering it, I would like to know how to set my MMP to 6v for the internal bec I think it said 5.5v is default but for as much as I paid for the servo I want to be able to use the full torque not be .5v short and I also don't want to buy an external bec, I'm done buying crap for my RCS for a while now. Lol!
I already have the castle field link program card thingy, I don't have the USB one. I tried looking on castle website and it just says variable 4.8-7.2v but I can't figure how to set it.

This is the Spektrum S6030 Digital High-Torque Surface Servo.* This servo has metal gears and 278 oz-in of torque, making it perfect for most 1/10 scale applications.

What, the Castle user's manual doesn't tell you how to make that adjustment, even w/o a programming card or USB link?

RustyUs 12-13-2014 04:32 PM

The USB Castle Link is needed for adjusting BEC.:(

zackS30 12-14-2014 08:45 AM

Balls. I didn't want to spend more money -_-

RustyUs 12-14-2014 08:54 AM

I'm just guessing here, but Castle (and other ESC companies) saw $$ when they took out the USB hookup from their original Mamba Max speed controls and offered "links to the computer" as an option on Mamba Max Pros.

zackS30 12-14-2014 01:56 PM

For sure, I spent 25$ on the field link and now I need another 25$ to hook it to the computer -_- and I'll I want to do is reset the became voltage :/

EXT2Rob 12-15-2014 02:49 PM

Yeah, but being able to play with throttle and brake curves is pretty cool. An of course, having the computer app and being able to configure the ESC graphically is just SO much easier, AND powerful.

Yeah, but having the hardware as standard equipment inside the the ESC is what Castle used to do... like my first generation Mamba Max. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2055385Now you have pay an extra $25 for a tiny proprietary interface adapter to hook up a USB cable! It's like they are taking a step backwards. A person is not saving any weight or getting a smaller ESC. Actually, the first Mamba Max is the same size and 10.1 grams lighter than the Mamba Max Pro. Sure my Mamba Max maybe outdated and ugly green (sorry, green wasn't the selling point for me) with big ass capacitors hanging out of it, but I can just grab a USB cable and tune away. I'm sure there is some generic reason they (Castle) did away with the usb port that I don't know about. If it was a concern of durability of the port being weak... I don't believe it. I did everything to the ESC but slam it into concrete wall.

Sorry for jumping in and throwing a mini hissy fit.

zackS30 12-15-2014 07:13 PM

I'm with rusty I'm a basher not a racer I don't care about the curves, all I want to do is change the bec voltage...

Well gentlemen, the Rc gods r looking out for me. My Grandmal from Indiana sent me a amazon gift card so I'm going to figure out how to use amazon and order a cc bec and a servo horn, the plastic on that comes with the spektrum servo bends all over the place.

Also another question, when I turn my wheels the servo only seems to turn to about 45° even though it turns to 90° I I adjusted my endpoint from 100% to 150% and it turns far enough to get the full steering range my wraith will allow but it doesn't stall. I hope that was the appropriate way to fix that.

zackS30 12-16-2014 04:21 PM

Oh, should I get an aluminum servo horn or just go for a thicker plastic one that won't bend?
The ones that came with it are a small circle a large + and a medium size 6 point star.

As long as you got full steering, left/right, you should be good to go.
When I use a higher torque servo, an aluminum arm usually follows, if I can get one to fit, that's just my preference.
Yeah, some of those stock arms that come with servos are "soft". Hitec usually gives an aluminum arm with their servos.

zackS30 12-16-2014 06:46 PM

My hitec one didn't have a metal one it had a super beefy looking plastic one. After some looking in the vast jungle of s#¡t I have I found an aluminum servo horn.
I tested everything out for just a second in my living room and it won't steer and go forward at the same time. If I stop it will steer and if I have the steering wheel neutral it will move forward and backwards. Good thing I already ordered the bec I guess.

EXT2Rob 12-16-2014 08:45 PM

***?? Can that Spektrum servo be using THAT much power that it's browning-out the ESC? What, are they getting their workings from Savox?

zackS30 12-16-2014 09:22 PM

The spektrum is a rebranded savöx pretty much yeah.
I got the became on order, its coming from new Hampshire to here(Arizona) so it'll probably be next week b4 I can drivey wraith again :/ at least my exo and honcho are still good to go lol.
However what's weird is that my exo has a hobbywing sc8 ESC, a spektrum avc receiver, and a savöx 1256tg servo and it doesn't brown out.

Those 2 servos are very similar.

Maj_Overdrive 12-16-2014 09:36 PM

The MMP has a pretty weak BEC in it so it may not be totally the servo's fault. I don't know why, I guess they thought it would be put in lighter 1/10 vehicles that didn't need lots of power for the servo. Guys who were putting the MMP in 1/8 buggies we're finding this out the hard way too, for a crawler type vehicle you definitely want an external BEC.

I'm pretty sure Castle's default voltage setting for their BECs (internal and external) is 5.1v to avoid blowing out any vintage 4.8v rated servos.

EXT2Rob 12-17-2014 08:36 AM

Don't we think it's about time that ESC makers design beefier BECs into their systems so you don't NEED an external BEC?! I mean, really! C'MON guys.

zackS30 12-17-2014 09:36 AM

For as much as ESCs costs u would think since the ESC delivers the power to the servo that it would be able to deliver the power necessary to power a wide range of servos since in this hobby we tend to put the biggest baddest thing we can into or cars and put them in servo stressful situations.

Maj_Overdrive 12-17-2014 11:11 AM

I agree. The fact u can adjust the voltage up to 7.4v on the gen2 RX8 and MMM2 esc is a step in the right direction though. Castle does have an esc or 2 with a really kickass BEC built in but they're for the flying crowd.

zackS30 12-17-2014 05:34 PM

The mamba max pro bec is only 3a though.
Another ? I have is that when I get the bec in how do I adjust it to 6v since I use a 2s lipo I don't want to fry the servo bcuz its max volt is 6v. Nominal is 4.8v but torque is only 222oz-in and I want the full 277oz-in

Maj_Overdrive 12-17-2014 07:39 PM

Castle bec's are adjusted using the Castle Link, no other way to adjust them that I know of. Your servo may say 4.8v or 6v, but in reality bofh are nominal voltages. A 4 cell receiver pack is 4.8v nominal but is over 4.8v when fully charged. A 5 cell receiver pack is 6v nominal but over 6 volts fully charged. Servo manufacturers use these nominal voltages for their torque ratings because they are common voltages used in rc.

Not sure where you heard Spektrum is Savox but Spektrum was developed by JR. The first Spektrum radios just JR transmitters in grey and converted to 2.4ghz. They even came with JR servos that were grey instead of black. I bring this up because I setup the BEC in my nephews LST for 6.2v and the old JR590's have been fine for years. Believe it or not the extra .2v made a difference, at 6.0v the led's on his truck would dim ever so slightly when turning. Set to 6.2v and no dimming at all.

zackS30 12-17-2014 11:56 PM

I read it on rctech I think that its the same as savox, I was trying to find the tooth for the spline and that's where I read that spektr was savox.
I've heard good things about Jr though.
My programming card came with a USB cable and I emailed castle about these questions also and so far yalls answers and theirs r consistent ( not that I doubted u guys I just know that u guys r faster to reply then castle) and I also asked them what the USB was for and they said I can plug it into my computer like castle link. So that's cool.

Well im going to say Savox has nothing to do with Spektrum or JR. Spektrum and JR are owned or at least distributed pretty much exclusively by Horizon Hobby. Savox is not on Horizon Hobby at all so I doubt they have anything to do with Spektrum or JR. Spektrum servos are JR, they used to have almost the same numbers, a JR275 was a S275. JR does make some nice servos, I used to use their 9000 series until I became a fan of Hitec.

zackS30 12-18-2014 01:15 PM

My 645mg is great in my honcho. Just not the wraith lol
