help with 2nd RC purchase
I need some help picking out my next RC. I have a Vaterra Glamis Uno on 3s that’s great but seems to brake too often. I want to keep it as a second car. I am a newbie that is looking for a new low maintenance basher (I don’t race but might like to try it in the future). I am all over the map and could use help narrowing down. I have a budget of $400-$600 and currently I am looking at losi SCTE troy lee RTR $550 + lipo, TLR 22 RTC $350 + lipo, Tekno SCT410.3 kit $400 + everything, Pro-line MT kit + everything, or Losi 8ight-E RTR $600.
Since I have a 2WD buggy I was interested in getting 4WD, but the TLR RTC looks like a great value even if a bit older. I want it to be fast (3S minimum), low breakage and easy to repair. I think a kit sounds fun but I don’t think the SCT410.3 will fit my budget once I add in all electronics. The 8ight looks the fastest but is also on the upper end of my budget and I have a buggy. And even though I don’t race the TLR appears to be higher quality over the SCTE RTR but I think the motor might not be 3S lipo capable. The MT just looks like a great basher but again 2WD. Any advice on where I should go from here?? Should I consider anything else like the yeti? Thanks! |
Thanks for listing your budget and what you're interested in. That makes it easier. :)
It sounds like you are interested in Short Course Trucks (SCT) which shine on the tracks, but bash about average. What terrain do you plan to run it on mostly? I personally would like to get a Losi 8ight-E, but if you already have a buggy and aren't interested in that, then I think you should scratch that off. The Tekno is going to be expensive just in general. It's a higher end truck and will cost you upwards of $700-$800 when finished. The Pro-line MT kits that they've released have really nice shocks, tires, gearboxes, etc, but like you say it's 2WD. If you're willing to sacrifice the 4WD, then I think they're kits are great, but just building a kit - expect $500-$600 to complete it, maybe more depending on your electronics choices. The kits teach you a lot though and there are plenty of guys here with the 'expert' knowledge that will help you out if you get stuck or have a question. The TLR 22 RTC is 2WD and won't handle 3S power. 3S in SCTs isn't all that common. Traxxas sells the Slash VXL and that handles 3S reliably. It runs hot, but doesn't seem to quit. With the right gearing it can run cool on 3S. So where should you go from here? I vote for the Losi-TEN Troy Lee SCTE RTR! It is well built, 4WD, handles 3S, has Mod 1 spur/pinion gears which are strong, aluminum shock bodies, hex hardware, metal gears, and even comes with a DX2E - a top of the 2CH line radio. That would actually probably be my choice of an RTR SCT if I was on the hunt for one. http://www.amain.com/rc-cars/losi-te...s03001/p427023 Add a SMC 3S 5000mah 50C lipo pack: http://www.smc-racing.net/index.php?...product_id=159 and you'll be on your way for just under $600. You can actually bring it even lower with Amain's coupon code: MAY250 If you spend over $250 (which you will of course with the SCTE being $550) you get $25 off. It's good until the end of the month. |
olaugh , i think losi eight 2.0 4wd and build from there , i ve seen the losi eights fly on 4s and 6s batts
and plenty of parts available too thats just my opinion ok |
There's nothing quite like a 1/8 brushless buggy. Yeah it's a buggy but it's nothing like your Uno. 1/8 buggies fly really well and they're just so precise and capable of so much. They're just a lot of fun IMO. It is possible to gear for 3s but you really should be running 4s or more in a 1/8 buggy. If 4s isn't in the cards then I'd scratch it off the list.
I've never driven a SCTE but everything I've read paints them as a slightly lighter 1/8 buggy. In my book that's not a bad thing. They're the same size, same basic layout, etc. They're just made less beefy because they aren't designed for the big power 1/8 buggies see. And if you decide short course isn't your thing a set of Stampede 4x4 size tires and a different body turns it into a monster truck. I'd pick the SCTE over the Tekno, the SCTE seems beefier and would make a better dual purpose basher/racer. |
great comments. thanks all

Whats the terrain that you will be bashing on? Are you wanting jumps or just speed?

And my vote; along with $.02, is to look at the 1/8 scale buggy side of things (like suggested from others above ^^) or even a truggy. Most are built with thicker material to take the abuse of normal off-road and general bashing. The added weight that goes along with the bigger scale, of course, makes 1/8 scale RCs easier to control when getting into rougher terrain and handles jumps better IMO. |
