touring car tuning help needed
Coming out of turns my car will tend to fishtail and spin around if I'm not real careful. What changes can I make to try to limit that tendency?

tighten the one in the front, or loosen the one in the rear. no more than 1/16 turn increments, you don't wanna overtighten or overloosen.

You may want to change the springs on the rear (try going one step harder - if that makes it worse then go softer) and adjust the droop (how far the suspension will fall below the centerline before it hits the stops) to allow a little more travel. It sounds like you may be picking up the inside rear wheel enough that you transfer most of the weight to the outside wheel, causing it to suddenly break traction when the inside wheel unloads.

You mention of droop brings me to a question. Is there a difference between ride height and droop? They both seem to be the same thing. Like if I lower the droop I am raising the ride height. My car is at 5MM front and back. Would have the front or rear heigher help?

I think softer in the rear would be the way to go. if you don't want to use a softer spring, try a different position on the rear shocks. I think a more upright position is softer-- I may be wrong.

gunnut is right too. the more the shocks are laid down, the more lateral grip your car will have.

There is a difference between ride height and droop. Ride height is the height that the car sits at when it's at rest. Droop is the maximum amount of negative suspension travel (how far the suspension drops from ride height before it hits the droop adjustment screws). When you go into a corner the suspension on the outside takes up most of the weight of the car (plus the G forces) and the spring compresses. The suspension on the inside gets unloaded by whatever amount the springs allow and if the droop setting is too high it will actually lose contact with the ground and transfer all of the lateral load to the other tire all at once. You can also get sway bars for the TC4 that may help with this problem.

I meant tighten up the rear or loosen up the front. I think. crap, i've been away from TC's for too long..somebody else help the kid out with the diffs:P |

You could also adjust the rear toe in. Thats probably the easiest to start with. Try half a degree, then 1, 1.5 or 2.

I would say your best bet is to see if you can get the lend of a set up station. To set your car up.
If you can tell me what surface you are running on and what car you have im sure we can find you a set up sheet. I think you will find it is a set up fault you have if you have never set your car up on a station you need to you will not belive the difference it will make. |
