My Brushless MT2-18SS with Mamba Max and A123 cells

My MT2 is just about ready to run, so I though I'd post a few pictures before I take it outside and thrash it. It's currently packing all aluminum GPM components, Mayhem 1/8 shocks, Spektrum DX3 radio, a Mamba Max 4600 brushless system with Mod1 gears, and a pair of 9.9v, 2300mah A123 Lithium batteries.

I'm still waiting for the "Hypersonic Turbo" voltage boost module to arrive, it's backordered at A123. Once it gets here, I plan to run the truck at 14v with the Mamba BEC disabled, and I have a small external BEC to mount that I got from RC-Monster. With the center driveline of the MT2, the saddle pack configuration was the best solution I could find to keep the CG low and the voltage high.

WoW! all I can say thats a serriosly nice truck and thats coming from a diehard buggy guy. Man bet you can jsutabotu waste any nitro truck and eletric guy on your track with that. Hope you can make a video woudl love see that baby in action. Abotu how much did that truck cost you less electronics?

OH you may need put a fan or something on the ESC as I know its rated for 12 cells, but people have had problems running more then 10.

Sweet! Thinking of getting the 5700 max and a123 cells for my losi xxx and ae b4. Really want to hear about your experiences--let us know when you run that thing!

that is a really clean looking setup dude. sick truck[8D]:D. it makes me want to do something similar. so, each pack is 3cells, making 9.9v each? how many MAH? and how does the "hypersonic turbo booster" unit work? it all sounds very interesting.

Just awesome, I have been wanting to do a brushless MT2 for a while now, I guess somebody beat me to it.

RE: My Brushless MT2-18SS with Mamba Max and A123 cells

Thanks for the props guys. I'll get some speeds and videos on it once the roads around here dry.

Each pack is 3 cells, 9.9v, 2300 mah. Right now I'm running them in parallel, so I've got 4600 mah, and I can adjust the voltage between 9.9 and 14. If this truck isn't exciting enough, I can still put in a higher capacity motor and controller along with a second $39 turbo module, and produce 20-28 volts. It would only have around 1500-2000 mah at those voltages, but it should be quick on the dirt...

Unfortunately, I don't have a scale small enough for an RC truck, so I can't weight it yet. Gotta get one of those!

Hey TriPower nice MT2!!! You might want to contact Castle and ask if that voltage booster is ok to use with a brushless ESC. I remember reading the instructions for my MGM brushless ESC and it stated that the ESC dumps voltage back into the pack during coasting and breaking. Not sure how that booster would react to that or even if the Castle ESC works like that.[sm=confused.gif]
Anyway nice truck[sm=tongue_smile.gif]

How exactly does that booster thing work? ANd what exactly is it called again?

sleepy23 09-16-2006 12:09 AM

RE: My Brushless MT2-18SS with Mamba Max and A123 cells

it allows you to amplify the voltage (or so the site says), but it only works on a123 packs. if you look at their site, they have decent prices, but if you feel like you must use their charger, then the dang charger is almost as high as a turbo pack

TriPower 09-16-2006 07:34 AM

RE: My Brushless MT2-18SS with Mamba Max and A123 cells

The Turbo Module just sits inline between the ESC and batteries. It has one button on it that you use to adjust the voltage to, in my case, roughly 10,11,12,13,14 volts. Some of their other packs adjust between 6.6 and 10.8 volts. This truck is more of a toy than a racer, so the adjustable voltage was a big plus.

If you can get over the negatives, mainly the proprietary charger and weird sizes, these pack are great. My 2300 packs charge to 9.9v in only 15 minutes, they have adjustable voltage, they're light, and they discharge at 30C. I believe the booster doesn't work with most other batteries because they can't handle 30C.

Looks Great!

DO NOT USE THAT HYPER THING WITH THE CASTLE IT WILL SMOKE IT. I promise. It will not go 6 cell lipo let alone where you are looking at.

How are you getting 9.9 out of a 3 cell lipo. The math dose not work. Lipo is 4.2 per cell static then you use 3.7 under load. Those come out to 12.6 and 11.1 repectively. Unless you are talking about your cut off voltage.

Huh? 6S lipo with the Mamba? What posts are you reading? Nothing I am doing has anything to do with lipo.

Did you forget your meds tonight? :D Just kidding!

A123 cells are 3.6v static. My system is capable of 28v, but as I said, I would need a new ESC and motor to support that.

That's because they are NOT Lithium polymer cells, they are Lithium ION cells.

groundpounder-

thanks for the confermation. When I saw the 3.3 post I had a feeling that they were ion. I was going to look for their site but havent yet. Maybe later today.

Can I get a link to their web site from anyone?

Thanks.

SWEEEEEET [8D]...mind if I print out a couple of those pics to put on our "Wall of Fame" in the tech dept? Mind if we put them on our website in the Castle customer picture section we're working on? If you get any good video footage we'd like to add it to the website as well if you don't mind. Regardless of whether you're ok w/us using them on the website or not, PLEASE email any video footage to [email protected] so I can show the rest of my co-workers. We LOVE seeing the fruits of our labor in action!!! :D

That is what I would call a major honor in RC ;)

Noww Joe, if you would be kind enough to donate me a 5700 system for some 3s lipo testing in a Team Losi XXX-T MF2 let me know, I would be more than willing to put my truck on the line for you guys  I would make sure you have video's and pictures coming out of your ears :)

Thanks Joe! Please feel free to use the pictures anywhere you'd like. Same with the video as soon as I get it.

I bought two Castle motors, one 4600 and one 5700, and a bunch of pinions, so I have a few things to try.
