Battery Packs Revival = Freezer?

How do you revive some of your older batteries that have been abused....earlier, when you didn't know any better?

I faintly remember hearing about sticking battery packs in the freezer? Does this actually do anything? Is it better placed beside the frozen chicken from costco or the bagged vegetables I'll never eat?

I heard that batteries work more efficiently in freezing temperatures but never to stick them in the freezer to revive them it's worth a shot. Stick it by the canned juice in the door.

dont freeze your packs. really the best thing you can do to improve tired packs is to load cycle them. this is basically just peaking them, then dump them at about 10 amps, then peak, then dump, and so on.

you wont see great improvement, but it should help if you havent done this b4.

if you have a charger capable of discharging do what he said... cycle the battery a bunch of times. I had a pack that i left dead for about 2 and a half years and I did this and it works fine now. I just used the Duratrax Intellipeak Pulse charger. It has a setting for Fast Charge / Discharge Cycle. I just left it on that for the better part of a day.

Is there any truth to ...

Higher charge rate will give higher volts at the sacrifice of mh?.. OR

Charging at lower rate will give lower volts and higher mh?...OR

Higher discharge rate is better for nicad or nimh prior to charging?

Does style/gauge of battery wire make much differance in proformance?

Well, I do know that a higher charge rate will give your batteries a bit of extra punch, they might sacrifice a pinch of mAh, but just a pinch. Some battery packs have a suggested charge rate on them.

On the main topic, I sometimes put my batteries in the fridge sometimes, to keep them cool before runs, it seems to do something. I would not try freezing them, I don't know what the side effects of freezing them would be.

Hmmm...ok, I'll have to find a discharger then cuz I only have a dynamite twin peaks charger and a prophet plus and I'm pretty sure neither of them have discharging capabilities..cuz my 3800's barely last more than 5 minutes before a huge drop in performance!!

Mind you, my basher's got steel chains on its tires and there's about 3-4 inches of snow on the ground here in Alberta :)

Well, batteries are supposed to have a quick voltage drop once the are out of juice. You do not want them to have a constant loss of voltage while you are using them. Instead, its better to have them run out of juice all at once, so there is not change in performance as you are driving.

Your batteries only last about 5 mins any they are 3800's, you may have some problem that is causing an inefficiency in the usage of your power, besides there being snow everywhere (which i guess would cause that to happen). Isint a bit brave to drive your RC car in the snow? I cant do it without my T4 getting full of snow, haha.

hehehehe....well I've pretty much waterproofed everything; bagged my servo and receiver, esc is waterproof, and applied water sealant in all the cracks and the battery ends.

I just hope the plastic doesn't become brittle cuz its -20 up here in Canada!! :(

wow, -20 already? it is about 37 here in southern Michigan. Anyway, how do you waterproof your ESC without restricting airflow to it for cooling?

Easy!! All Mtroniks ESC's are waterproof :) and I have a backup LRP esc that's also water proof :D

And yah it's -20ish up here in Canada right now....try controlling your pistol grip radio with gloves on! Especially throttle IT SUCKS!!

At -20 why the heck would you worry about cooling?!

Because my basher is currently geared wrong so my batt packs are always burning when I'm through with 7 minutes...but the issue wasn't really about cooling, moreso about reviving batt. packs and whether sticking your batt packs besides last years meatloaf in the freezer would help bring life back to them.

Incidentally, I just burned another hole through the bottom of the shrink wrap on my latest 3800mah [:@] kinda weird that it was just the battery that went up in smoke....of course my esc was pretty hot, my motor was just warm...but neither of those had the magic smoke :D but now I'm off to eBay again [:@][:@][:@]
