It's a good idea to get one. Unless your house is fire proof...

I think they're like 10 or 15 bucks depending on what size you get.

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

Ok maybe a bit more than that, but still a good investment if you don't want your house to burn down.

We don't want you to either. ;)

Another thing that is useful is to use a charger that has a battery temperature sensor and temperature cut-off feature like the Duratrax Ice.

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

O ok but just for added safety its good to purchase the sack

Everybody has to stop tripping out about lipos, they dont just explod outta now where..., you have to do sumthing wrong to them aslong as you charge it with a good charger, and use a good lipo cut off the chances of them exploding are the same of nimh,

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

ive seen one in person, it was big, and it was hot, a crappy venom 5000mah 2s lipo, poured a little gas on it, and lit. only once ive seen and ive had 3-4 lipos, and none even came close to exploding, the worst thing that happens is if you leave them plugged in to your car, they'll discharge and you'll be left with a useless pack that you just payed 100+ for

You can search around and find fireproof bags for anywhere from a dollar on e-bay to the "official" $30 lipo sack. I have a lipo sack that I use for my big lipos, and for storage of all of them. I also have a clay pot that I charge my 1/18 scale lipos in.

Lipos are only dangerous if you don't treat them properly. They need to be charged at the right "MAH", balanced and properly stored.

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

Lipos aren't dangerous unless you damage them badly, short them out or way overcharge them. Any battery is a hazard if you do these things to it.

I store mine and charge them on a steel shelf over concrete.

I know this is bass-awkwards, but I'll buy a Chinese battery on the cheap, but I don't want to buy a counterfeit Lipo Sack. Has anyone tried or tested the cheaper ones off eBay? I'll probably just buy one from my LHS, but I'm always looking for a way to save a few bucks. Other than that, I'll just keep using my drywall-lined ammo box.

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

a "lipo sack" can be anything. i don't use anything because i have a hyperion charger that sense cell count and since hyperion lipos can be charged at 2c there is no chance i can mess them up.

but anything that doesn't burn easily is a good thing to use for a lipo sack. a concrete block or a clay pot as suggested about. remember that if you see smoke: immediately unplug it and throw it on your drive way. then go get a camera and stand clear as you tape the inferno.

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

Wow, i never thought the nimh could have such a violent explosion from overcharging. Never seen that before! Thanks for the cool link FairTax4me, now i feel like it (lipo) is just as dangerous as a nimh. Ofcourse there is just a little bit of extra maintenance but from what i've heard around, if you keep the proper care of them there is hardly a difference..

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

I charge and store mine in my house on a desk. If you treat them right you have nothing to worry about! I have a fma cellpro 10s balancing charger so I have no worries of overcharging[8D] I have been uising lipos for years and the only time I have had issues is when I did somthing stupid or intentional(mostly intentional) [>:] even then it hard to get them to explode[:@]

FairTax4me 01-17-2009 06:08 PM

RE: Lipo Sack... EXPLOSION

Yes, you would have to severely neglect a nimh for it to explode like that. That guy was feeding those batteries about 30 -40 amps if you read the description which is way more than most batteries are designed for, especially Alkalines, but the same concept applies to any metal cell battery. If they get too hot, a lot of pressure will build up inside and they'll explode pretty violently.
