custom chassis in the making!

hi after my stock chassis broke on my rustler vxl me and my dad decided to make one using his newly homade CNC router/mill

we chose a cutting board to start on as it was cheap and is easy to cut. also the nylon or poly?????? substance is supposed to be quite strong

wat do you think?
its a work in progress.

that is so slick!!

i clicked on this thread expecting to see some roughly cut and grinded piece of fiberglass or something.

i couldnt have been more mistaken.

again, super slick, and i will be following this thread.

been working on it and its comin together well. unforunately a few problems with milling errors.
one of the battery bar walls has bad triangles (hold down screws in wrong spot).
a plate was slightly shorter than it needs to be so i will be adding some sort of spcer were i bolt it onto the chassis. its hiding so you wont really see it.

nice, looking good so far. what type of plastic is that stuff? im wondering as to wether the chassis will be strong enough, i think you will deffinately have to make a set of vertical supports, and plastimelt them to the chassis, because as it is it probably wont be strong enough to withstand a landing. i used some plastic like that for a built before, but found that the plastic just wasnt strong enough to hold the screws in it, they would rip out, so i would suggest either putting a bolt the whole way through those rvp that you have, or getting an acid glue stuff, so the plastic is melted into a join, that will make it alot stronger. failing finding some of that glue, some epoxy or the like would probly be the best bet, but either way, id strongly recommend putting some bolts all the way through if you can...

im thinking of setting my router up as a bench grinder, so i can set it for heights halfway through materials like you have cut, but it only a hand held one, not cnc style, lol

just so you know im not talking out my arse about how you should do it, i have done this stuff before:

its using bolts in all sections except were a metal plate is reinforcing it. that reverse tranny chassis looks nice.

i think its polypropylene. not the strongest, alll the hours work will probably snap after a crash or 2.

i really apreciate your help, wats this acid stuff that melts plastic together?

You said you used a cutting board for a kitchen? I would like to know if it warps because some of the cutting boards warp after time and how it handles heat from motor or sun? How much heavier did it make it? It looks really good. Hope to see some pics.

crushgear64 09-14-2009 06:00 PM

RE: custom chassis in the making!

its only 20 grams heavier than stock, if i wanted to though u could save 20g on it but would lose strength.

ill see if it warps.

RE: custom chassis in the making!

took it our for a run. direct crashes into the curb including one when i was doing a wheelie, many fights with rocks and many cartwheels later its still fine.

Very nice! The only flaw I can see and this just speculation at its best is the flex the chassis could have. It may or may not have flex, like I said, just speculating ;). If all works good for yah, then all you need to do next is start selling them to people, I'm sure there is a market for that.

Ray :D

RE: custom chassis in the making!

there does seem to be a bit of flex. no sure if i will be a problem.

the transmission has been twisted around. it handles better.

next step is to make one for my slash.
