I've got that RC itch...
After all these years...
I've been considering getting back into RC. I used to bash around in the late 80's early 90's. If i remember correctly I used to have a Blackfoot, Astute, and MRC Thunder King (still in near perfect condition in my parents attic. I actually considered trying to hop it up to today's standards but i don't think i have the time or energy). Well recently a buddy of mine jumped into the hobby and i've gotten that "itch". I'm looking bash around our sub division/backyard/wherever else i can find local with the occasion trip out to our closest track (about 30-40 min drive). My yard is mainly grass with some areas of dirt/leaves under our oak trees. So i've been researching and watching vids on youtube for a couple of weeks and I think I've narrowed down my choices and am looking for any advice or input I can get. I'm looking at Rustler VXL, Stampede VXL, E-Firestorm Flux, and Slash 4x4. I'm looking to spend between $300-400 out of the gate but don't mind updating and tweaking for improvement down the line. I stopped in my LHSand noticed that most of their electric cars were Traxxas with a few more HPI's in their nitro section. P.S. Any tips on how to clear this with my better half are greatly appreciated. Ihave a 2yr old son.... hmmmmm |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
Well I read thru a little bit of your thread and was thinking a Stampede vxl and then I seen you mentioned a Stampede..That is what I would recomend..The bigger wheels will help you out in the grass..And that thing will haul major butt with the right batt..You cant beat Traxxas bashing quality..Man they are tuff...[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

RE: I've got that RC itch...
Buy her something just as expensive that she'll like... :D ?
Best advice I can give is buy something that you can easily get parts for. Yes, Traxxas is HUGE, they're sold in nearly every hobby store in the U.S. and then some. They make excellent bashers. Not so great on the racing circuit, although the Slash took the RC world by storm when it came out. A lot of racing clubs made up a Slash specific class because so many people wanted to race them. Not sure how well those are holding up against the competition from Associated, Losi and the like. |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
I'll give my standard advice here. Get 4WD if you're going to be running in grass at all. The Slash 4WD will be better than the Stampede VXL, despite the advantage in ground clearance.
E-Savage is another good option. You would even have enough for another battery pack and decent charger if you bought one. Ground clearance of the Stampede, but with 4WD. Handles much better in grass and on loose surfaces. |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
Thanks for the advice. I've been reading a bit about people who have taken the Slash 4x4 and done some minor tweaks to convert to a monster truck. Could this be the possible way to go?
|
RE: I've got that RC itch...
anyway is possible, but since the slash 4x4 starts at $400 you might be breaching your budget...
but I would say go with 4 wheel drive too, tons of fun, so is 2wd.....but.....lacks a little. |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
For back yard bashing in grass a 4x4 would be better. I'm not totally sold on the new Slash. If you like it then go for it. Do have a look at the E-Savage and E-revo. Both are a little larger than what you're looking at and require two batteries but they are both great trucks.
|
RE: I've got that RC itch...
I started out looking at the E-Revo & E-Savage but both are more than I'd like to spend. My LHS has the Slash for $379 and and I believe if I sign up to be a member at Tower Hobbies I can get $60 off and free shipping (from what I've heard).
I'm sure I'll do a bit of dirt/gravel/pavement bashing as well. I just have to find some spots near where I live (may head out to the levee). Are upgrades and replacement parts more readily available for the Slash now? I read about some complaints w/ people not being able to get their trucks up and running again. |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
e-savage is well within your price range(240 at amain), its the savage flux that costs so much.
If it was me i would get the e-savage. I much prefer 4wd and the extra size in bashing is prefered |

I much prefer 4wd and the extra size in bashing is prefered I'm not sure if amain ships to Canada though. I know Tower does, but their deal where you need coupons just to get a fair price is maddening. The E-Savage is a perfect example. $240 at amain with no jerking around. $280 at tower, and if you're lucky, you can get it back down to $240. [&:] You have a Canadian ebay too, right? Check ebay store hobby shops too. By the time you factor in shipping and customs, you may just be better off buying from Canada. |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
What kind of performance can I expect from the regular Brushed Savage? I've heard that the Brushed motors don't last as long. How much would it cost to upgrade to the brushless setup down the road? The streets in my subdivision are paved so i'm sure i'll be running up and down them a bit as well.
P.S. I live in Louisiana... not quite Canada ;) |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
It's always better to buy brushless on the car beforehand if you're thinking about it.Its cheaper and alot of times they come with other little goodies and upgrades that you wont get otherwise. You could look at the E-maxx too, but if you are on a budget, the stampede is what i recommend out of your choices. It does surprisingly good on grass despite being 2wd, and it is very tough. You could always look at the E-maxx too. You're looking at around $150 minimum for a good quality brushless system. You can get them for as little as $100 for something that will work okay (ez run) and up to probably $400+ for the best of the best systems.

RE: I've got that RC itch...
im agreeing w/ most everyone one here-imo i say go 4wd b/c u can remove parts to go to 2wd-some will say dont do this but its your money and u can do what ever u want w/ it. if u want more of a basher then go w/ a monster truck like e-maxx, e-revo-u can get them off ebay for under 400 easily. tamiya offers acouple 4wd's for under 200(dualhunter,darkimpact,twindetonator)-there kits so u have to assemble them-but tamiya is known for easy to follow instructions plus u can get parts from most any hobbyshop that carrys tamiya or online like towerhobbies which has plenty of parts in stock. as for hpi ive never owned a hpi anything so i cant comment on their products but from the youtube vids ive seen there pretty durable-im not here to bash on any companys im just giving u suggestions. stay away from the unknown companys like redcat b/c parts arent easily avai. hpi, traxxas, losi and AE r your best bet. good luck. and dont be afraid of nitros either-they do require more regular maintaince but the sound is just awesome.

RE: I've got that RC itch...
Nitro isn't really much of an option. I get enough letters from my Home Owners Association as it is and the noise from the nitro would just be one more thing for them to bother me about.
|
RE: I've got that RC itch...
Yes i agree with 4wd too. and maybe you could look at the Mini E-revo vxl. its a mini monster truck with brushless an 4wd, (not as high of ground clearance) but if your wife doesnt know how much you spent on it an sees the size she will assume that you didnt spend a fortune on it. but aftermarket parts arent very great. otherwise i say go slash 4x4

RE: I've got that RC itch...
I'm still doing a lot of research trying to find what would fit me best.
A buddy of mine sent me this link today www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_228/products_id/158423/n/Kyosho-DBX-VE-Ready-Set-1-10th-4WD-Electric-Off-Road-Buggy&source=google_car_kits It's a Kyosho DBX VE. Does anyone have any experience with this buggy? It seems like a nice deal but main downside might be availability of parts locally. There isn't much in way of reviews or videos for this particular model. Any input or thoughts are appreciated. |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
wanna sell that Blackfoot?? Ive always wanted one, but have never bought one.
|
RE: I've got that RC itch...
I'm going to go with everyone and say 4wd but throw the slash 4x4 in..lol
It's a great basher, racer and aftermarket parts are starting to be available. Along with soon traxxas will catch up and have stock parts. You get the 2.4 radio and BL system from the start. Also you said some trips to the track, sure there will be a SC class for you to join in. |

RE: I've got that RC itch...
@ken448 I'm afraid I have no idea what happened to that Blackfoot. Not sure what happened when my parents moved 15 years ago. I do have an old MRC Thunderking that is pretty much in mint condition. The body isn't even painted. I'm considering selling that to help pay for this little venture.
@MTboy for the money it looks like the Slash 4x4 may be the way to go. I was even looking at doing a MT conversion on it. I haven't seen a SC category at my local track besides a mixed racing class http://www.********peedway.com/id3.html @The Mad Modder - I don't mind doing a kit. The first two cars I had were kits. Blackfoot & Astute (fragile as could be). Now i'm married and have a 2yr old so time is at a premium. But if it's a deal that' too good to pass up then i'd definitely take a look at Tamiya again |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
i think 4wd is seriously overrated...especially for bashing. 2wd is a lot cheaper and will do just as well on grass, dirt, etc..
|
RE: I've got that RC itch...
I'm trying to find out if my local track has a 4x4 SC class that I could run a Slash in if I went that route. They do have 1/8 buggy & truggy classes. Any advice on a nice entry level 1/8 setup (ie - kit, esc/motor, transmitter/receiver, servo etc...)
I'm thinking about piecing the parts together over a couple of months time. I'm also looking at the Kyosho Inferno VE ready set but I need to find out how the local parts support is. Anyone have any experience with the inferno? Thanks again for all the help |
RE: I've got that RC itch...
My Slash 4 X 4 screams across the grass with no problem. It does like to do the occasional front flip or two or three when it hits something over an inch. Go with the VXL Stampede or EMaxx, then upgrade. Stay away from the stadium trucks in grass, the will tend to wheelie a lot and not turn. I.E. hit crap.
