Hey all! Great to be back on the forums after a two year long hiatus! Had to sell all of my stuff, including the true UE supermaxx unfortunately, to help pay for a new art studio. Now that I'm settled in and have a bit more disposable income, I think I'm ready to jump right back into the hobby. As I can see, there are a BUNCH of new manufacturers/models available. Simply put: I'm a bit overwhelmed with all of the awesome new kits and electronics out there. I'm just wondering if you guys could help me narrow down my choices a bit. I'd really appreciate it.


My RC background is primarily in 1/10 and 1/8 scale off-road electric racing/nitro bashing. I'm looking to throw myself back into the fray with a fairly tough, versatile pavement runner that's also capable of handling light gravel drifting (soccer field-esque) without too much slop while also being able to handle the occasional bash.


My criteria for what I'm looking for are:
-Brushless power (ideally)
-solid drivetrain capable of handling dirt drift runs/light bashing
-Minimal rollover (stable suspension setup)
-on-road/light off-roading + dirt field running
-parts availability (avoiding ordering from outside of US/canada)


I've noticed that there are a bunch of rally cars available these days. My last car prior to selling my old collection was an associated FT SC10, and I wasn't to fond of it because it was a little too "truck-y". would rally be a decent class to check out? I've been considering the Kyosho DRX-VE, HPI WR8 Flux, and the Traxxas Rally (even though it looks a little goofy IMO)

Woah. Thanks! Is this a sturdy kit? Tamiya's the only brand that I've never owned. I've always been worried about their parts availability.

Tamiya parts are available on Tower Hobbies, and they are pretty darned durable.

I have a Traxxas Rally and it isn't the most scale Rally car but it does drive really well. It's also a bit better in rougher terrain than some of the other rally cars out there due to it's increased ground clearance and larger tires SCT truck size tires. The other nice thing is that it's the size of a 1/8 buggy so bodies intended for cars like the Ofna GTP and other Rally Game bodies will fit it.

I havent seen seen any reviews on the DF-03ra but my brother inlaw has a DF-03. A few years back he did mention tower stopped carrying some parts for it even though they still sell the DF-03. This all could've changed or be different for the DF-03ra though. The DF-03 also has a battery compartment that's rounded for 6 cell NiMh packs that doesn't fit standard hardcase Lipos without modification, again this could've changed since my brother inlaw's DF-03 is about 5yrs old now. The HPI WR8 gets good reviews and seems quite capable in the videos I've seen. Jang from URC has video of it on a RC track doing very well. He also does a nice comparison video between the Traxxas, HPI and Kyosho rally cars.

If if you don't care about looks and are concerned more with performance a 1/10 4wd buggy may be a good option. The rally bodies can get beat up being so close to the ground, not so with a buggy body. A 1/10 4wd buggy is low (or can be lowered) enough to handle pavement running really well and has enough ground clearance for more off-road duties. Just something to consider.

could always get parts from tamiyaUSA too I've had to do that a few times for some of my Tamiyas. A few times I just ordered from Japan which sometimes was cheaper, and funny enough I guess I won some japanese hobby shop prize for customers the one time(I ordered like a $7 part shipped), and got a $40 model in the mail that I wasn't expecting
