Welcome to RCU!

To get you started theres alot of questions to be asked to find an r/c the suites you perfectly.
Try to answer as many of these as possible so I and others here on RCU can help you out on making your decision.

1) Will you be driving onroad or offroad most of the time?
2) Looks or durability?
3) What scale would you be most interested in? 1/10, 1/16, 1/18?
4) Are you a basher or a racer?
5) How much are you looking to spend?
6) Will you be upgrading it in the furure?

All of those questions will tell us alot about your likes and dislikes. BTW you getting a free Clodbuster from your dad? Thats pretty nice of him! The clodbuster should be very fun to use.

My friend had shown me the traxxas rustler and i thought it was sick.
Theres the rustler VXL($429) and the normal rustler XL-5($229) and because
i have such a i guess small budget i'm probably gonna get the rustler XL-5.

If i get more money (christmas or thanksgiving) then i will be able to get the
rustler VXL. but if you had a choice of getting one or the other which would you
choose?

I will be getting my rc after christmas because i only have $40 and i get $10 a week.
So tell me you're choices and ill see what i think. (btw, im 13)

Thanks!

Not sure where you are buying those r/c's form but you are getting ripped off. The XL-5 is like 165 dollarsd while the VXL is 330

ha ha. and i would not recomend a Caterpillar engine,

traxxas are great trucks and for a beginer , you could not go wrong with a XL5 rustler ot stampede for that matter.

Yeah but we know what you WOULD recommend.....so umm. Yeah. Those prices are kinda up there. Look for another hobby shop, or if you're comfortable with online shopping, hit Towerhobbies.com for good prices and discounts.

I was talking about the shop he mentioned charging more money for models not how Tamiya is expensive....even though some of their toyish models are a little pricey for what you get.

Tamiya are for the most part brittle, out dated, and as flyer said toyish. Plastic gears and friction shocks tamiya come with are trash. The only tamiya cars that are not trash are about 300$+ You mentioned a clod buster, in its stock form its trash, it really needs alot of $ to upgrade it to a decent truck.

For a beginner you cant really get better than a traxxas stampede/rustler/bandit. The cars are made rock solid, fast out of the box (compared to others) and have TONs of upgradeable options.

If your looking to race, go to the track and see what classes there are and what people are using.

What's better is all matter of opinion. I have Traxxas, Tamiya, HPI, Losi, Schumacher, Habao and few other brands of RC's. Personally I think most in 100% stock form aren't very fun. They become fun for me when I put hop-ups on them so they can handle brushless. It's all matter of preference.

I think if anyone bought any of these brands first coming into the hobby they will have a good time and enjoy themselves. As they learn they can hop them up or even sell it and get something different.

Remember it's all about having fun. Don't worry about what everyone else thinks and get what you like or want. Most important thing is how easily can you get spare parts if something breaks. So stay away from anything you cannot get a steady supply of spares for.

Enjoy and let us know what you get.

Studysession---One of the best posts I've seen. There's nothing wrong with having opinions or being brand loyal, but opinions vary from person to person. I will say that most people base their opinions on something, though, and that is good. Most of us are here to promote our favorite rc's, but also to help others make informed decisions. Being relatively new to rc, I would want to know all I could about a particular model before buying it because I don't have a lot of time or money to waste getting a vehicle that didn't suit my needs. Everybody plays favorites, but in the end most models have pros and cons. You just have to weigh them and get the best fit for you and your budget.

BTW, E-savage kicks butt!! (sorry, had to do it)

Do you mean by the brand, and not shop, I go by Tower.

Anyway, I'd reccomend something by HPI. That E Firestorm looks to be good, as the nitro one is decent anyway. I just wish that they didn't include a 15t fireball motor.[:@]

But yeah, I've had many different brands of RC, and of all the testing I've done, Traxxas just kept failing. I'd take HPI or Losi for a nicer model, or Tamiya for scale stuff. It's not like Tamiya is bad to what some say, it's that their main focus is on model kits, that's what they started out doing anyway. Even though most are considered bashers or shelf queens, there are some nice racing kits, though some not cheap, that they produce. I don't see that many other companies with models that go for 1k or more as vintage items, unless it is something really special.

But yeah, I'd wait till the E Firestorm is out, we should see how well that fairs...
