depends on what you're doing. ball diffs offer more control but gear diffs are more rugged. ball diffs also require a lot more maintenance.
I typically prefer ball diffs on my on road and gear diffs on my off road but have used both kinds on both on and off road.

Also I think it depends on what power you have
Ball diffs are much lighter, so if you're using a silver can motor, ball diffs would be better as it'd accelerate faster etc
But if you are running some crazy setup, then I'd go with geared diffs and just use silicone diff oil to tighten the action

Do you plan on upgrading the motor?
If no, and ball diffs are cheap, then it would be too bad of an idea
However if you're upgrading motors (planning to at least) and/or ball diffs are expensive then I wouldn't bother
