Default Tamiya M-05 Mini and M-04L Beetle

Just bought a Tamiya M-05 Mini so I thought i'd share it with you. I'm really happy with how the body turned out.

Upgrades so far:

- Ball bearings
- Yeah Racing 12T 3300kv brushless combo. (running on 11.1v lipo)

I also just bought an M-04 VW Beetle. RWD should be interesting.

Enjoy!

Yeah its fairly big. The COG is a lot higher now too but I enjoy the power haha.

I've been looking for a 3 cell that would fit underneath in the battery tray but have been unsuccessful. Any help?

So the bearings arrived today so I got to building my new M-04L. A few hours later and here she is. I did the body a few days ago and am really happy with it. Painted the tyres white to simulate "white wall" tyres.

Let me know what you think, enjoy!

haha, nice! wheels turned out well. I wonder how long the white-out will stay on there once a 3s lipo is pushing it along [sm=biggrin.gif]

Yeah I don't think it'll last too long, I probably wont use these tyres all that much anyway, I prefer foam. I've just got an RZ motor with the stock ESC in it at the moment. I'll probably take the 12T brushless out of the M-05 and put it in the M-04 to see how it goes. It's pretty quick with the RZ but it just lacks a bit of punch.

Thanks mate. I'll take some better photos when I take it for a drive next, those photos aren't the best. Try and get some video too.

Nice pics! So I put the 12T brushless in the M-04 and am running the RZ in the mini (soon to be on 7.4 Lipo). The M-04 flies. And does mad burnouts......

Nice build...I am finishing an M-04l kit as we speak, but was going to use another body. I decided to switch back & forth because my wife used to have a Beetle, so I just painted it this past weekend.

I wanted to ask about how the RWD M-04 chassis handles the 12T/3300kv Yeah Racing combo...I was looking at getting one of these from rcmart, or possibly the Yeah Racing Falsonic 5.5T combo. I thought I read somewhere that the 12t was really a 380-sized engine in a 540 housing, and the 5.5t was actually a true 540 sized motor.

How do you like your 12t in the M-04l? Any opinions about the larger/faster 5.5t motor? Don't want to way overpower a non-racing RWD and have it be too tail-happy...

TIA for your responses.

Well what batteries you'll be using. For the sake of this argument we'll assume that a 3 cell LiPo is being used (that's what I use). The 12T is almost too much for it. So the 5.5T would be massive overkill. When I first tried driving it, I put foam tyres on it and it flipped like crazy every time I steered relatively hard. Seeing as it is RWD, that also means it only has rear wheel braking. So if you brake hard from high-ish speed it's like pulling the hand-brake (or emergency brake) in a normal car. The rear gets loose and it will fish tail and flip. I tried heaps of different tyres but they were all too grippy and caused the car to flip. So I put the stock ones back on and they seem to handle the best. They let the car slide a bit. I usually only use foam tyres as they last longer and don't balloon but I guess I'm going to have to stick to the stock rubber with this (they wear out really quickly haha- so I bought 8 pairs).

It's a lot of fun to drive and it is crazy fast with the 12T. You need a huge area to drive it in if you want to get it up to full speed, as planting it from the start will just make it spin out. I wouldn't recommend getting the 5.5T, you will spend so much time trying to get it to drive right that you wont have an fun with it.

I had the 12T in my M-05 initially and it was massive overkill, it just constantly spun the wheels. I took it out and put a Tamiya RZ motor in it with the stock ESC and I love it. Decent amount of speed and really fun to drive.

So getting the faster motor isn't always the best option. Power it for it's capabilities. It's a small car, go with the 12T!

Hope this helps! Let me know how you go.

Cheers

So in the process of trying to find the right tyres for the M-05 I flipped it quite a bit. The tail lght stickers got all scratched up and they never really stuck down anyway. So I painted tail lights on myself. And added some head lights.

Yeah I had a look at those. I found Super Grip ones for cheaper, so I went with those. Might try the x-patterns next time.

To the OP... have you tried the CA glue trick to keep your minis from traction rolling? (flipping)

"Original poster"

Put a small bead of CA glue on the very outside corner of the front tires and it prevents traction roll.

Oh ok cool, I'll keep that in mind. I've bought 8 pairs of tyres that don't make it roll so I think I'll be good for a while lol

Thanks...you pretty much confirmed my suspicions/concerns about the larger motor with light RWD car. I ordered a Yeah Racing 12T brushless motor/ESC combo the other day, and I post when I finish the build.
