Anyone know what would make a computer freeze?
Whenever I play G2, or my combat flight sim, I get about 1-8min. flight time and the stupid thing freezes, sounds like a record skipping, the picture is there, but no buttons, mouse, remote, ctrl+alt+delete does nothing, only alternative is to hit restart or shut it off manually.
Would LOVE any help. Geforce2, AMD athlon, 1.333, ASUS mother board.

Anyone know what would make a computer freeze?
I have the same issue with G2. I have;
I am going to update the drivers the video card, and make sure that the following is correct in my bios. This is from PNY.com for my card.
The settings described here should provide maximum performance and stability:
Fast Writes - Enabled.
AGP Mode - 2x or 4x, depending on whether your motherboard supports AGP4X or not.
AGP Driving Control - Auto.
AGP Aperture - see 'What should my AGP Aperture size be set to?' question.
Assign IRQ to VGA - Enabled.
Video BIOS Shadow - Disabled.
Video BIOS Cacheable - Disabled.
C8000 - xxxxx Shadow - Disabled.
Peer Concurrency - Enabled.
Concurrent PCI Host - Enabled.
PCI Streaming - Enabled.
VGA Palette Snoop - Disabled.
You can also try these settings if you are having problems:
Memory hole between 15-16MB - Enabled.
http://www.pny.com/home/techsupport/GC_faq.cfm
Let me know what happens. I will do the same after work...

JohnVH,
Which Asus MB do you have the A7M with onboard sound? I have not troubleshooted my system yet. But I suspect it's a problem with the onboard sound. After about a minute of flight the system crashes, sometimes rebooting.
Note: I am running Deluxe. Have not been able to install G2, have to send my disk back.

That will do it
You are lucky, I had to take my A7A266 back. Never could get it to load Windows ME. Check around the net. There are some known problems with that MB. I opted for the A7M 266 worked great. Except for G2
Anway, I never put the covers on my computers. They stay cooler.

I looked over my BIOS settings, and found that Video Bios Shadow was enabled. I disabled it, and there was no change. I also changed the aperture, no change, it still locks up. Perhaps it is not us but rather an issue with RealFlight? I do not have trouble with any other game out there...

Does it seem to freeze up on a change in background music? Make sure you have the newest drivers for your sound and video cards.
Maybe try turning off any background souns (start with the music) and see what happens.
Brad Streeter
PS Make sure that you are not running any background applications, such as virus protection software or anything else that could cause G2 to freeze up. Because of the sophistication of the software, it needs all the computing power you can give it.

I also have the A7A266. Been lucky and have had no problems with G2. Rare freezing but that's it. Do you have the probe installed to monitor the MB temp?
also, I d/l the drivers for my pny geforece 3 ti500 card from the nvidia website and it was a little flaky. I redownloaded the original drivers from PNY and all is working perfect.
There were people as said above that had problems with this M/B but mine has been ok so far. I keep the Asusprobe on and it monitors temp and voltage.
Elwood. Maybe try the nvidia drivers. perhaps they may work for you? Can't hurt

Anyone know what would make a computer freeze?
T28,
Look at the first post and you will see that the system listed there is close to what you stated, but there is an issue. My system is well within the system requirements listed on the box for G2. If the computer is within the requirements, and it still locks up, it is an application issue. A slow or fast processor will not matter if the code needs a little tweaking.

Might not help you a bit but you might run "dxdiag" from the command line and walk through the various tabs/pages and check out what DirectX is doing or not doing on your system.

Fixed It!
Time to eat a little crow...
I downloaded the AGP driver for the motherboard from Gigabyte, and now it runs fine. I thought it was updated...
I ran it for 30 minutes using my patented Stress Test. I trimmed the plane a little off, let it fly and crash again and again as I went and did something else. Now when I have the time, she should work again!
Want to have some fun? Hot rod the turbine engine for the F-86, and fly from inside! RealFlight didn't make the field big enough!

video card has 64 mb of ddr ram on board and the processor does next to nothing these days. The video card has more transistors in it than any P4 processor > 20,000; you have 4x agp bus the board; its not a graphics issue. If you have a cheap heatsink/fan on it you'll cook the processor. The only time I've seen any AMD stutter is when its too hot. Greater than 160F is getting warm. The asus temp probe will tell you what temp you're running. P4's are junk, but they withstand heat better than AMD's will.
