I would suggest an AMD .Just bought an amd 2200, with 256 ram, nvida 128 meg 128 bit x-dreamer case.Didn't go all out but preforms well.I 'd say do some research, personally i went to www.ncix.com in canada. There are sites out there to grade prospective components like video, sound, motherboards, etc.

I've had good luck with Dell. I have a Dimension 4600. Nvidia 5200 FX graphics card. Rocks. Pay anywhere from $600-2000 depending what you all want. I paid $850. Included Sound blaster Audigy, CD burner, flat screen.

Any newer computer should fit the bill for what you want to do. The only thing you really need to be concerned about is the video card. For anything that uses 3D such as a flight sim you need a better card. I would check out the minumum requirements for the flight sim software you are considering then go at least one step above. Nvidia and ATI's newer cards are all suitable. Get at least 256mb of RAM. Onboard sound is fine unless you have specific audio needs. You'll know if you do. Minumum of 17" monitor. 19 in an upscale monitor would be better. You might want to get your computer seperate from your monitor and pick up something like a 19" Viewsonic Professional from newegg.com. Another option is to have someone you know custom build you one. I build my own but don't recomend that other people do unless they know what they are doing. You don't save money..

I just went through the process. Since the display and I/O gear was OK, I only needed a tower. Bought the parts from Fry's and online.
AMD 2600+ Barton uproc 333Mhz FSB, 512K Cache, with heatsink and fan, 512MB DDR RAM, Shuttle Ultra MB, 80GB Maxtor HDD, CD/DVD, CD Writer, 128MB Nvidia chipset graphics card, Alaska tower, modem, added an extra cooling fan, etc. With rebates comes to $474. Runs like a champ. One heck of an improvement over my 233Mhz system from which the only thing I salvaged was the floppy drive and a "Dilbert" sticker for the front. |
