Aerofly help PLEASE
 

I just bought a new computer and Aerofly will not fire up. I guess I should say that when it tries to verify the interface the computer locks up. It is plugged into a serial port. It was working fine on the old computer, but it would not load the add-on. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Dale

Do you have a 3D video card and is it Open GL compliant?

Do you have another serial device you can plug into it to test it?

This computer has what they call "integrated graphics with 64MB shared video memory". I have no idea what Open GL compliant is. No, I don't have anything to test the serial port. Sorry, I am not very computer literate. The computer is an HP a420n with an AMD processor running Windows XP. It has 512 MB ram and a 160gb hard drive. Dale

What computer is it? When you say new, is it new to you or new on the market. Where did you buy it? Best Buy or something, do you have a link to the model somewhere on the net?

You are going to need a 3D card for it to work.

It's an HP model DQ175#ABA with AMD Athlon XP processor 3000+ with QuantiSpeed architecture, 512MB DDR ****M, 160.0MB hard drive and integrated graphics with 64MB shared video memory. Dale

This is your video. This is not a standalone card. This is a chipset on the motherboard. Read what this says below. You need better video card. Unless you can find a way to mazimize that card. Where did you purchase your AFP?

Integrated Intel Extreme 3D Graphics

Despite the name, the 3D graphics here are relatively weak. That said, it's a perfectly good, low-cost solution for everyday computing. You'll only notice the shortcomings if you're into 3D gaming or other forms of 3D-graphics software. "Integrated" means that it is actually not a card but rather has the hardware integrated with the computer's main board. This situation can be good in that it saves an expansion slot for something else. However, if the integrated graphics circuity fails, you may be looking at replacing the motherboard rather than a single card.

I bought the Aerofly at Quantum Models. I guess I will try to find one of the recommended graphic cards tomorrow. Thanks for all the advice and help. Dale

I would snoop around Intels site and get all the info you can. You may just need to update your driver and configure for Open GL if it has it.

Keep me posted. I just purchased the same computer and was hoping to run AFP when it gets here (on backorder with OMP) without adding a graphics card.. The good news is the computer does have an open AGP slot if the onboard card can't get the job done. Let me know what works.

Robert if you are familiar with video setups you need to find out if your Intel Chip is Open GL ready and if so how to maximize it. Do you play counterstrike or MS Flight Sim 2004 on that computer?

I'm new to XP, any idea where to look for the Open GL? I don't have MS FS 2004 on there yet, but I intend to. Is that good or bad? Does AFP come with a serial plug or usb? Thanks, Robert

Good news. It is Open GL compliant, but not usually supported by the windows drivers, but can be by downloading the current drivers from the Intel site.

"The Intel®Extreme Graphics controllers support hardware acceleration of OpenGL* applications in 16-bit and 32-bit color depths. OpenGL* 1.3 is the latest version currently supported by the Intel Extreme Graphics Drivers. Drivers that come with Windows* or that are downloaded from Windows* Update typically do not support OpenGL*. For optimal performance of OpenGL applications, install the latest graphics drivers from Intel. Also, exit any running background applications, such as virus scanners, NetMeeting*, or any programs that run in the task bar."

Make sure you run your computer in 16 bit mode, not 32. Definatley make sure no other apps are running!

As it turns ou- my Intel Extreme 3D Graphics Card is actually an AMD-Acer VIA KM400. Now I'm off to find a driver (again). Probably just end up putting out another dollar and getting a real graphics card. I had hoped i wouldn't have to, but I got a tell ya- somehow I knew it.

16 bit it is.
