Help! Which video card do I need?

I have an HP Pavillion- 500mhz AMD K6-2 boostet to 300 plus sram. Its videographics consist of a PCI Local Bus on the motherboard with SIS integrated controler and 2 to 8 MB UMA video memory. The computer has 2 open PCI ports but no A** port.

With the latest version of FMS I'm only seeing 3 frames per second!!! Needles to say this makes for a very jerky and frustrating flight.

I'd like to be able to use FMS, G2, Cocpitmaster, or any of the other great simulators effectively but cost efficiently. Which PCI card would you experts suggest to fill that bill. Best Buy has the Visiontek GEForce2 MX200 32MB PCI card on sale right now for $49.95 after the rebate. Would that card work alright for my application?

Thanks for your knowlege,

Hugh Mason

You won't do any better than the MX, with the current box.

With the Geforce2 MX card, your card will be limited by the bandwidth of
your old system anyway. This card may yield acceptable play with the sims.

It will most definitely be *worlds* above what you are running now.

Are there better cards? Certainly.
Are there better cards which will make more difference for YOU? Nope.
I couldn't see spending any more money than that, either.
Don't expect to be able to run in the highest of resolutions, with all details,
on every sim or game you buy... but it should be "acceptable" for most.

To get any better, you'd need to be upgrading cpu/mobo/ram.

(Coming from an ex-*hardcore gamer* for the last four years. I've tried em all)

Watkins has it right. Any more video card and it will not matter due to the system itself.

You're limited by that PCI slot. I cant remember the exact data rate of a standard PCI, but it's extremely slow compared to an AGP port. That Geforce card will definitely help and the price sounds right, but don't expect it to be a rocket though. You have a few factors against you. The small and slow cache of your k6 and the single datarate memory are two of them. Although I haven't seen any real steals on PCI video cards lately, I can put you in touch with a couple of good computer parts suppliers. If you're into upgrading or replacing your computer, Throw me an email at [email protected].
