What do you think of this video card for AFP Deluxe or G3?

Looking at it on the ATI site, X300 appears to be more of an office version card.. Doesnt really mention anything about gaming performance in the entire ad. STL pilot had recommended the ATI 9700 to me as a PCI option but although listed as a PCI card it actually fits into the AGP slot. Why do you need to go PCI?, they are supposedly a little slower.

Stay away from the miracle do it all cards. Just stick with a good video card and nothing else. They will do nothing but bog the cards down and cause problems. You'll never use the TV out more then 2 times. Stick with Raedon family.

I've got running an ATI 9700 PCI and 9800 Pro AGP. Both run AFP Deluxe just fine on 2.5 Ghz PIV 512 Ram.

STL, where did you find the 9700 PCI? I looked for it and couldnt find it. The ATI site says there is no 9700 PCI??

That one came with my Dell. That's what it says on the ticket. Maybe it's AGP?

I know the 9800 is AGP.

Forget the X 300 Junk....Get the Nvidia 6800 GT (if you can afford it) and thank yourself later...

Radeon 9800 and X800 are good also.

Yeah, I looked at the 9800 hard but I would have had to upgrade my power supply and possibly replace my motherboard.

I wanted to buy the 9700 since it sounded like a good PCI slot card but lo and behold, it is an AGP 3.0 slot card which is the 8x capable configuration IF your chipset will run 8x, which my supposedly "bad to the bone" AMD Athlon motherboard will not.

I still havent found a suitable Graphics card option for a PCI slot, but Im still looking.

ATI X800 Pro and nVidia 6800 GT are both excellent cards...I concur. I'm running the 6800 GT.

Ok,

The way I understand it is this....

PCI-Express is going to be the new industry standard and you will see more and more computers with this architechture. On the new MOBOs you'll have a series of PCI express slots, and one of them will be the one for the video card. It's supposed to be as fast as, if not faster than AGP for video and the rest of the slots will be backwards compatable with existing PCI technology. The idea is to get rid of the PCI bottleneck that we currently have on our systems. PCI express MOBOs will NOT have AGP slots.

The ATI card numbers work like this:
9600, 9700, 9800 = AGP cards
X600, X700, X800 = the equivilent cards, but they are the PCI-Express version.

I don't know how nVidia is handeling this.

If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

It looks to me like you are wrong.
At ATI's site, some 'X' cards are AGP, some are PCIE.

Since you guys seem to know your cards...

My system is a PIV 2.0 w/ 1G Rdram. Video is a Geforce ti4600 AGP.
It's almost 3 years old now, I hope I can use AeroPro Deluxe with maybe not maxed out graphical settings, but close?
According to the specs it is close to the recommended range of system performance. This r/c sim is not as hungry as the big FPS out now, right?

Wrong. X800's come in AGP and PCIE. The "X" stands for 10 which is the next line from the 9*** series. The X700 and X600 only come in PCIE for now. It's supposed to be faster but current hardware doesn't even use the full 8x yet. One benifit from PCIE is that it can deliver up to 150watts of power through the slot instead of having to supply power straight from the PSU. PCIe will not have agp but NVIDIA and ATI will come out with a PCIE to AGP bridge so you can use your agp card in the PCIE slot.

As far as the sim being able to run on the 4600 it will run, it just all depends on how high you want to crank it up. 1024x768 will probably do just fine. I would not worry about upgrading to PCIE just yet because there is yet to be a PCIe 1x mobo released and there are no PCIE soundcards or anything. The only thing that is PCIE so far is the agp.

PCIE for graphics is called PCIE 16x. The slots for other stuff is PCIE 1x.

The sim is way less stressful on your system than a FPS. Well, it all depends on what FPS. When I was using AFP, I had a 9800pro. I could crank everything to the max and play at the 1280x1024(highest my monitor will go, until my new one gets here Thursday) resolution with 4xaa and 8x af. Now the new one might be a little more demanding because of the shaders and the physics. But not much more than the original.

No there are no PCIE versions of the 9700 or 9800. Only the "x" line has PCIE.

For those of you looking for good pci graphics card, not too expensive, this is the one to get.

You have no idea what you are talking about. It will in no way "bog" down the card, your 9700 and 9800 pro has DVI/TV out, and the X300 is a Radeon family card. Everything since the Rage family of cards is in the Radeon family. Rage was before Radeon. That was way back.

As far as X800pro VS 6800gt, both are excellent cards. But performance wise the 6800gt stomps the X800pro.

I love my X800XT. 11,400 3DMark03, 63,000 in Aquamark3, and 5,490 in 3dMark 05. No overclocking. Doubled my scores compared to my old 9800pro.

Watch-out for the free gift scam. I bought my 6800 GT from Newegg, said they were out of stock of the "free" paperweights at checkout. They shipped my order with no "free gift" as there were none available.

Thanks for the advice. I actually have the 128 MB ATI Raedon X300 SE coming in a new Dell ... other system specs are 3.2 GHz, 512 MB Ram. I know it will smokw with G2 and AFP (my current sims), as they both are great on my 2.4 GHz 512 MB system with a NVidea Geforce 4 64 MB card.

I do not expect to upgrade to G3 based upon the bad reviews. Perhaps I'll take the plunge on AFP Deluxe. :D

There are several "standards" in PC video cards. AT bus (stone age) PCI (older) AGP (latest) PCI Express (new)
Of course MAC computers were light years ahead of PCs (still are) , but their retarded "proprietary" bus and software put those systems out of reach for most people.


AGP is very fast with a 2GBS transfer rate. It is uni-directional, meaning send and receive data maxes out at 8x rate of 2GBS over the same bus.
AGP is excellent for gaming, and some of the better cards will produce frame rates well in excess of 70 FPS on even the most complex games
As monitor resolution goes up however, frame rates plummet. The best one can do today on even the best graphics card (9800 or 6800) is about 65 FPS at 1600x1200 with full shading and aliasing. Anthing less of a card and you have to start shutting details off to preserve frame rates.


The fix - PCI Express
PCI Express is VERY FAST, it is bi-directional and has a max transfer rate of 8GBS (4 each direction)
So far it has supported frame rates as high as 190 on 1600 x 1200. What this means is that you can leave on maximum anti-aliasing, shading, detail, etc and still see
a smoothe picture at incredible high resolution... or you can step up resolution.


The two main suppliers of graphics accelerators (ATI and NVidia) have both modes available in most of their cards. Of course, you will only notice it in the high end like the Radeon X800 or GEforce6800 Ultra. You can only use one or the other unless your mobo maker supplies slots for either (some do) Dell's are cheap and most likely wont even have an AGP slot unless you bought one of the higher end desktops.

I have the 6800 GT Ultra .. amazing piece of hardware.... of course it cost near $600 when I bought it and won't run on less than a 500 watt power supply.
3Dmark rating on my system is over 4000 at 1600x1200 ! SMOKIN!

Double molex connectors. I thought NVIDIA re-specified it and came to the conclusion that it only needed at least a 350watt psu? Of course 500watt will do. I have had my 480wt psu for over a year now and have had zero problems. I won't be able to see what my X800XT will do at 1600x1200 until I get my new monitor. My current one will only do 1280x1024. Should be here next week. NEC CRT all the way!!!

I need the 500 watts... I have a four drive RAID 0/1 setup... 4 10,000 RPM 80G drives... 4X the transfer rate of standard IDE.. I think it says 400 W min. 500 is prefered as once you add all the other goodies you want some headroom...
