Computer Monitors

Any comments on the best type of computer monitor to use with a sim? Does the higher refresh rate and faster screen response of a CRT have an advantage over the new flat panel displays? Just thought I would ask to see what preferences people have.

Thanks

Ross

HI Ross
I myself use a Dell 19 in CRT for gameing ect, and a 17 in flat panel for work ect. This is my own personal preferance, others may have different ideas and preferances.

Regards Dave.

It really depends on what the monitor is showing. High refresh rates on a CRT are really best for "gaming". When you are getting high FPS (frames per second) most flat panel monitors will have a slight ghosting effect. I've noticed that when playing first person shooters on a 19 inch flat panel monitor.

With flight simulators though, its not as noticeable. Also, one thing to remember is that with a CRT your lines will be cleaner - anti-aliasing has a better effect on CRTs than it does on flat panels.

The new Flat panels are fast enough for gaming, sim etc. I use them for both work and play. They don't take huge desk space, They looks way cooler than CRT, they generate less heat, they have no radiation, they don't refresh 70 times per second like CRT. etc etc etc.. when you got the bucks, get one :)

only problem is the resolution is low with flat screens!!!

I have a Dell Trinatron which shows 1600 x 1200. The higher resloultion makes the sims unbelievable. Im about to sell it for a 19" higher res monitior.. Flat screens dont come close!

Sorry Sonic but I don not think you are correct here. I have a CRT at home while I have no real prefrence to each I have a 19" flat panel at work Samsug SyncMaster 910T. I love them both for gaming the resolution on the flat panel is unbelievable and I can get up to 2048X1536 granted it a bit ridiculous, but I can get it on my flat panel. Its a matter of space savings, $$, and the weight they carry. My Flat panel weighs about 12lbs and my 19" Sony CRT at home weighs 65 lbs. Resolution is one thing but a top notch video card is half the battle too. I have the radeon pro graphics 128 mb in both my machines. Gamming is incredible. to say the least.

I agree that CRT monitors still rule. I have not seen one LCD/Plasma flat screen that even comes close to a top end CRT monitor for display smoothness, dollar for dollar. CRT, for me!
