R_C Sim is DOWN
No more downloads at RC Sim as they have exceeded their usage. Not sure how long that is going to last but they also say they don't have enough advertising to allow them to keep the site going in 2006. So there go all the resources (planes, scenery, etc.) that were easily available.

RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
Before we "panic", some thoughts:
IF it is a bandwidth issue, MOST hosts do that on a monthly basis...which means they'll be back up for December possibly. If so, we could possibly organize an effort to collect the models and sceneries, and host them elsewhere. Obviously, we'd have to be sure that we have permission from the various authors and such. Might at least be worth considering...?? |
RE: R_C Sim is DOWN

RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
Hi Dave,
I think it is not a question of censorship. I believe, that rc-sim, as it became a kind of institution in the rc-sim-world over the years, does not want to let their most 'valuable' things been 'taken away' in exaggerated words. You know? I think they are very proud of what they have reached and now having to face that they have to stop that all because of missing sponsorship is hard in a personal way. Just try to get into their skin: you have built that up over years, invested sweat and tears - and private money, and now everything seems to be unstable and close to a break down. This is not easy. In such a situation a helping hand offering to 'take over' might be seen as "taking it away" or "looting" (to overdraw it) - although you had the best in mind when offering your help. You know? I think it is a hard time for rc-sim now and they are thankfull for any help to solve the issue - to continue rc-sim.de. I hope that may explain it a bit why they might have refused your helping idea... Greets, Lego |
RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
Non for profit sites always fail, sorry to say but true. The only way for RCSIM to survive is go commercial. Especially with the launch of G3 downloadable planes it's going to explode. The artists are just going to have to allow it for the survival of the site. With the traffic the site gets advertising would be SIMPLE, you just have to put the red flag up and loud. OMP would be their first customer with bells on. If any 1 single owner of the domain owns the domain there could be no possibility of a takeover, you just need the right people to manage the commercial site and that's easy.
I think I read that rcsim used 3.5 TB of bandwidth so far this year and only 300 gb so far this month? Sorry to say but that's nothing. You can get a dedicated server with 1000 GB a month for $99 and 1.5 TB a month for $129. How many banner ads would it take? Why would they even hesitate??? Lose the personal hump, it's that simple. There is no other way to look at it from a long lasting standpoint. Believe me I know. |
RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
Hi,
ahhmm, rc-sim has banner adds. And as you may have noticed also a shop. That's how they're financing it currently. But they lost some of the sponsors, so they are looking for new ones. Those cheap hosts are not very reliable (up-time etc.). And most of them are quite slow because they are mass-server hosting many sites through one internet connection. rc-sim used to have a server for their own. That's why they have that fast download speed. And that costs a bit more than 130 bucks... Cheers, Lego |
RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
Thanks for the back up Lego. Lets hope this issue can be resolved for the guys at rc-sim.

RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
Hi,
they need just some new sponsors... That's all. Cheers, Lego |

That's why they have that fast download speed. And that costs a bit more than 130 bucks... Sorry but your wrong about Ipower, for $99-$129 a month YOU GET YOUR OWN BOX (all your's) on one of largest server farms in the world. I own more then 50+ websites with Ipowerweb and 2 dedicated 1U boxes. Heck you can request the 2 1U's on 2 seperate upstream providers and load balance or mirror them. Uptime and speed is never an issue with Ipower. I never recall RC-SIM being fast. Not knocking them, just shooting straight. Yes Ipower sits on shared pipes, but these are HUGE pipes with 100 MB burst and multiple upstream and downstream providers. They are the WalMart of hosting and can afford to add all the pipes/boxes/channels they need too keep their customers from having any lag time. The days of having to host your own boxes on your own dedicated T-1's or whatever are way over. If you're paying more and thinking you're getting better, it's just not true Lego. Companies like Ipower are becoming the backbone for many commercial companies including the 4 companies that I own. This is a much better solution then something like Bit Torrent. |
RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
hope they are up and running again soon.........they were great[:o]

RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
Hi Dion,
Higgy and his team are the biggest rc-simulation website worldwide. I think they are the ones with the big experience... There is a difference between making money and building a community. RC-sim is not made for maximising commercial benefits. It is not a company and Higgy and his teams do not have to keep it alive to earn money for their living. On the other hand choosing the easiest solution ist not allways the best solution. We in germany tend to look for the best solution. Not only in the manner of beeing best in commercial business but also beeing best in quality, social involment, technical efficiency etc. And very often these are things that do not match with a cheap and commercial efficient approach. So the outcome is a very complex solution with extremely high quality, which is attractive for a much bigger community as a commercial solution/product would be. Higgy and his team do it the 'german way' and not the 'american way'. That's why they are the biggest rc-sim-site worldwide. And that's why Mercedes, Audi, Porsche etc. are made in Germany... ;) You know? Everybody can do it cheap. But only a few are able to do it best. ;):D But to be honest: I think it is relatively obsolete that we two (you and me) discuss any commercial topics of rc-sim. Because we do not have any influence on what they do... Cheers, Lego |
RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
Lego, please understand that I want to see rcsim survive as much as anyone else. I would like to see it to continue to grow forever but the only way to do this on the Internet is to think like a business, this is the reality. Unless of course they want to continually have fund raisers or have someone with some cash flip the bills. Look at any successful website and look what makes it successful. RCSIM.DE may be the worlds largest rcsim forum, but compared to what? Sorry but 300 GB of data trasfer is nothing anymore.
It really has nothing to do with the German or the American way, it's the successful way and the solutions are looking at your right in the face when you are viewing this thread right now. Also by no means does Ipowerweb have cheap service. You are looking at it from a dollar standpoint, but why don't you/they look at it from a performance standpoint. If you think that the more expensive route will get better product, not by a longshot. The problem is that what I'm reading on rcsim.de forums is that everyone is thinking "inside the box" and these guys need to think outside. Simple solutions are the best solutions. I want to help Lego, believe me. And that's why Mercedes, Audi, Porsche etc. are made in Germany... BUSH RULES! |

Hi Dion,
I think this discussion becomes a bit weird... A single flight with our new F-22 Raptor and we could wipe out all 3 of those factories in minutes. Let's stop that here. This discussion makes no sense anymore. Cheers, Lego |
RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
All c'mon only trying to have some humor in all this not to get anyone upset.
I'm only trying to offer some help because rcsim.de is asking for it. I know exactly what it takes to keep a website running smoothly no matter what kind of content is on the website, whether it be products or downloads a website is a website. You can coat it with words like community, service and things like that, but at the end of the day it's all the same. Anyhow I wish them luck. |
RE: R_C Sim is DOWN
So anywys...wheres everyone putting their new creations for us to download ??

Dion,
I didn't take that serious anyway... I guess rc-sim will open again soon, so everything will be fine again... Cheers, Lego |
