Have you guys seen [link=http://www.phoenix-sim.com/]THIS[/link]? Its gonna be available in 2006 and looks very promising.

Thanks for the link Rick. I don’t think the "BIG 3" are going to be too worried about it unfortunately. The models look somewhat poorly detailed when compared to Aerofly’s or G3. The lighting is not as good as in G3 as well.

I am still gonna keep an eye on this one. Curious what kind of interface they'll go with and will users be able to create their own planes, schemes panos etc... and what about multiplay??

OK that link works.
It does have this statement on one of the pages.

"Many of these features are available in split-screen mode, which supports up to four people flying simultaneously."

Whatever that means.

Hi,
wow - just another Reflex-clone.
It is based on a customizable graphics system, yeah... so, they put into it a minimum efford. Let's hope the 'realistic models' are worth the 140 bucks ... ;)

And look - they have found also some new words: The old and well known technique now is called 'EnvironmentWrap' technology. Isn't it what Reflex calls 'Panolusion'?
And guess what? The 'EnvironmentWrap' technology is patented too! [X(]

Cheers,
Lego

'EnvironmentWrap technology'
Sounds like the packaging.

At the risk of being really picky this screenshot does not do it any favours ...

The main blades do not line with the disk (right hand side of the picture) and blur is constant along the length of the blade!

Hi,
the picture of the Cierva looks like a bit strange compared to the other examples of rotor graphics:

Hmmm... I was looking at the site and I thought the shots looked very nice indeed. I own both Reflex and AFPD, and looking at some of the shots, I thought I'd compare the jet-ranger (my favourite helicopter) images:

Aerofly:

From the phoenix site:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...HOE_ranger.jpg

I'm sure the quality in the second image far exceeds that of the first - but of course you should make up your own mind :)

EDIT: Also the site didnt work for me last night, but this morning it was up fine - perhaps they have had a lot of hits in the past few days and the server cannot keep up?

RE: New R/C Flightsim!

Hi,
I disagree. The quality of the model on the second picture is obviously poorer. You can see some shading issues around the engine cover and edges of the upper window frame and the side of the lower windows. That indicates that too few polygones were used in that areas.
The AFPD model is much more detailed...

Cheers,
Lego

RE: New R/C Flightsim!

Hi Lego :) first of all thanks for your reply!

I must admit that I cannot see any issues due to polygon density - maybe due to mipmapping (which is caused by the gfx card being used) - the first shot also appears to have been downsampled quite a lot - you can see the artifacts caused by this in the strange aliasing along the silhouette. This method is often used to hide silhouette issues caused by lack of model detail. Again this is conjecture - I think we'll have to see what the physics of this new sim are like before we make any judgement, because what is a sim without the dynamics to back up the graphics? I doubt anyone here would argue that AFPD's helicopter dynamics are anything to call home about ;) (reflex is another matter)

Regards,
Jan Reynolds

There are no cylinders in the cierva pic. The rockers and pushrods/tubes are there, but no radial cylinders.
