RC Flight Simulator Pricing?

There has been debate about the current price of RC Flight Simulator software which currently is around $200.

Please select the response that best describes your situation or feelings

I bought G3 for $200 and it's a terrific deal. Now that I know all that G3 is capable of, I would probably buy it for $500. You can't beat it.

I think the cost is prohibitive. I'd rather spend $200 on a new plane.

I don't think anyone's trying to rip people off. I'm sure the software is expensive to develop and the potential market isn't all that big, so the cost per unit is high.

With that said, I bought AFP (not the deluxe version) on eBay for less than $40. Yeah it's old and doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but the price was right and it allows me to try stuff out without smashing anything.

Well tell NightOne about AFP because I've been trying (on another thread) and he just keeps complaining about the $200 sims. AFP physics (the way the palnes actually fly) are as good as any of the sims on the market. You can buy it new for $99 or find it on E-bay like mmdudek. If you use the sims as a serious learning tool, the value is much higher in the money you save on crashes.

I bought G2 for almost $200 and I did enjoy the sim but it wasn't the best. Then real flights comes out iwth a G3 and tries to give everoyne that owned G2 a $50 discount ? So I wasn't about to go ahead and buy another sim to upgrade at another $150 . SO I paicently waited and sat back keeping a check on the classified section for a unhappy owner of G3. well I eventually found that unsatified owner and traded even up my mint condition G2 for his new bearly used G3. The program was better then G2 out of box but still was a bit poor till they started making the updates to it. I think it has come a long way. and will still probably go a long way yet as well.

I've been told that this poll will never reach 100 votes any time soon. Is that true? :D

I think because the same people keep checking on the thread to see what people are saying. I've checked this thread aboou 7 times now. That probably explains the hits.

When will the poll reach 100 voters?

Lets look at the largest vote cast, the vote for the first choice in the list.

23 votes total.
17 of them was in the first two days.
Since then, there has been one vote a day for 4 days and one day with 2 votes.

Looking at some of the other choices, they haven't gotten votes at all for most days.
So we could take a wild guess and say that the voting rate, if it doesn't slow down more, is about 1.5 voters per day.

At that rate it'll take how many more days to hit 100 voters? And that'll be if the voting doesn't slow down any more.

Yeah, it might not slow down. And it might even pick up, but it's been on all week.

This poll has very little meaning and here is why:

2/3 of the votes are for $200 sim (purchased $200 one or took them time and then purchased) and 1/3 feels $200 is not a price they are willing to pay.

Since this is a simulator forum, I bet if you ask: Do you have a $200 simulator? 2/3 of the visitors here will say yes, because they are interested in simulators (all voters are visiting THIS forum).

So, this poll only tells you the fact that 2/3 of people interested of simulators have one of the expensive ones, which is to be expected for people frequenting a sim forum.

The poll does not tell you what is the simulators penetration in the general flying public, nor what they are willing to pay. I bet they are not willing to pay $200. If that was not true, WallMart would be named Nordstrom and Nordstrom would be named WallMart.

I don't disagree with your assessment of the poll.

However, the reason I started this poll was that I was making the case (in another thread) that $99 was the magic price for simulators and that the current popular sims were overpriced. I started the poll to see how other sim buyers felt.

In your place, I would do the poll in another forum, let say "Beginners forum" and ask the same questions (but will add [link=http://rcflightsim.com]ClearView[/link] as a real alternative for $30). The beginners are the future customers and their opinion is the one that counts in long run.

Aren't you the developer/creator/programmer/owner of Clearview? and thus have a personal/financial interest in this?

Sorry, if my assumptions are wrong.

Yes I am. So what's wrong with this? The ClearView URL is under my name so anyone knows I am interested party. That does not mean I can't have my opinions, right? There are quite a lot posts for AFPD on this forum with people with finansial interest in afpd as well.

Nothing. You are certainly entitled to your opinion.

However, unfortunately your opinion does have at least a small of bias based on those interests. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

The market sets the price for hte simulators, not opinions. Ever go into a good software store before? Ever see prices of 2-3-4-5-6 hundred ... sometimes more for software? Because of market demand only, that's why they are priced what they are priced. If $99 was the magic price, then that's what the price would be and the vendors would have to put the price there no matter how much profit they made or didn't make. But what you don't consider is the value of the software, you only consider it's price tag. The software will save you much more then the price you pay in crashes, most would argue and that alone raises the price considerably. Lots of other facets too.

Pricing is a science and it's not that complex, but you do have to understand your markets. When sales slow down that typically sets the price, this shift then becomes vendors poll and the vendor sets his price. Want to lower the prices of good sims, don't buy them, that will lower the prices. But then that will cost you more in planes and helis to learn to fly them, so now your forced to buy it, dolp.

Sorry but your poll is a waste of time. The opinions have already been expressed by the people that bought the software and set their own market price.

That works.

And what happens when it does work? The existing ones die. Or their development stops dead. And if the activity that was being simulated is complex enough, there won't be any new ones to refill the RC flight sim hole in the market, because development costs would be more than the possible return. But maybe, just maybe some halfbaked ones will hit and stick for awhile. But don't bet on it.

Hey, pretty much everything here is a waste of time. Flying model airplanes? That's why it is a hobby. A leisure activity.
