FMS is free and works on Win XP. For best effect you'll want to build or buy an interface adaptor for your Tx but you can start off with just keyboard or joysticks.

If you have to get a joystick because you don't have one already then I would skip the joystick and go for an adapter cable so you can use your transmitter. You won't get much benefit from practicing on a joystick because it doesn’t train your thumbs what to do.

Another free sim, which works fine in XP is PRE-Flight (search this forum for download and configuration info).

There's an unexpensive USB joystick with 2 control sticks, which feels pretty close to an R/C transmitter (except for the throttle stick): Logitech RumblePad. I've bought mine refurbished off eBay for $10.

If your brother-in-law's PC has a gameport, you may consider ordering a TX-to-Gameport adapter, which can work with FMS, PRE-Flight or any other sim in Windows XP.
Search this forum for sources, there quite a few vendors selling such adapters. Just stay away from FMS-only interfaces, which can not be use with any sim other than FMS.

Backyard Edition has cool models and good physics,
I paid 29.95$ for the download.
