I have just purchased Real Flight 3.5 and have a similar computer to yours. I had problems with the on board graphics card not being powerful enough to display the high quality graphics of Real Flight 3.5. I have on order a 512 mb graphics card which hopefully enable me to turn back on all the graphics features.

Real flight always worked OK but did not have instant response to control inputs caused through the on board graphics card having difficulty putting the data on the screen quickly enough. I have temporarily (I hope temporally) turned off some of these features and Real Flight is now working fine, but the graphics are limited because of my limited on board graphics card. The new card will solve all these problems!!!or it better had or I will not be happy!

Cheers

David

Yes you need a good graphicscard, my 4 year old Dell laptop did not work with RealFlight G4.
I bought a new killer HP and it works great, but the puter was real expensive[:o]

Good Luck

You want a FULLY DX9 compliant card.

If you want to really play it safe, get a DX10 card instead.

e.g. an Nvidia 8600 GT w/256 megs of ram or more is a good compromise as it is fairly inexpensive, but can be clocked up to speeds rivaling an Nvidia 8800 GT.

Most inexpensive computers come with an integrated video processor on the motherboard rather than a dedicated video card with its own video processor and video memory. This is why you can buy a fast, modern PC with lots of memory and it still won't run your flight simulator worth a poop.

The measure of a video card's power is based more on the GPU (graphics processing unit) rather than the amount of video memory on the card. The following chart will provide you with a good idea of the relative strength of a video card:

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html

Real Flight G3.5 and G4 can be fairly demanding, but you don't necessarily need to spend $280 for an Nvidia G8800GT card to run it. The Radeon 2600 Pro, GeForce 8600 GT, and Radeon 2600 XT are all readily available in the $80 to $100 price range and any of the three should run Real Flight like lightning.

Video cards are usually available for far less at online resellers like www.newegg.com or www.mwave.com than the prices they sell for at your local Best Buy or Office Depot.

Good luck and good shopping!

No problem. A PCI Express is not needed. Just upgrade your existing AGP card with a better AGP card. May I suggest an ATI Radeon chipset? Available at www.newegg.com

And if you want a bit of advice from a computer tech, when you do replace that Dell, don't do it with another Dell!

FOR YOUR INFO:

Keep in mind you power supply when upgrading your video cards. The higher-end cards require ATX power supplies north of 450 Watts.

E.G., I installed an older PowerColor (ATI Radeon) X800 256MByte PCI-Express card and found the power supply on my brand new HP M7860n, Core2 Duo, system only had a 300 Watt powersupply. I had to replace it with a 450 Watt supply.

Even though this card is relatively old compared to what's available today it is still a high-end game card and better than most of today's low-budget game cards; it easily managed RealFlight G3.5.

Well, it looks like my ATI x800GT (PowerColor) PCI-Express card has crashed my computer (8E,C05). Since I removed the card and ATI drivers and re-install the Geforce 7300LE my computer has not crashed but the video response is sh.t (have not even tried to run Realflight 3.5).

I just ordered an nVidia Geforce 8600GT card. I couldn't pass up the price and besides Realflight 3.5 do not need heavy-duty graphics capability. I'm hoping I will get some other value-added from this card since I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate and this card is 10X compliant out of the box.
