FS One Problem

I installed FS One on PC (xmas present for the kid). Runs fine as an administror on Windows XP, however as a limited account it dies when I get to the point of actually trying to fly. I am on the low end of RAM. Any ideas would help. Customer support has not helped yet.

Dan,
When you say it "dies" what actually does the screen do? Go black, Go white, quite FSOne, freeze?

Also, have you tried to turn off all graphic features> go to options on the main screen and turn off all of the graphic features, go to the other tabs and turn down or off any of the features that may require more processing speed.

Lastly, when you say Customer support has not helped yet, is that a reference to they have tried, but failed or you have not called them yet?

RE: FS One Problem

Upgraded my RAM from 512M to 2GB... no difference. The FS-ONE program dies when I actually try to start flying from the selection(airplane/transmitter/field) screen. The FS-ONE window just disapears and I am back to a normal desktop with no FS-ONE running at all. I beleive after much testing that FS-ONE is one of those windows programs that must run as a priviledged account (administrator/poweruser) and will not run as a limited account - that is simply unacceptable with a kids. IMHO as a 25 year IT professional - this is a huge flaw and I would never have purchased the product if I had known this. The only way I can get the program to run for my kid is if I open it for him with "RUN AS" from my account. Horizon hobby technical support has offered me no help during a phone conversation nor do I expect my email to be answered with anything helpfull. As a long time JR user and believer in Horizon Hobby products quality - I couldn't be more disapointed at this time. Hopefully I can find a way to make this work without having to sell it on EBAY and purchase a different SIM.

RE: FS One Problem

Do yourself a favour and get RealFlight G4.5 instead. Seriously. I've been using RF since G3 and it's done nothing but improve, however the other day I installed FS One out of curiosity (don't ask where I got it and I won't tell you no lies) and I couldn't have been more disappointed with it. The software itself is bloated and resource hungry, the menu-ing system is an over-complicated, klunky piece of krap, the graphics look like they're straight off my old 1990's Commodore Amiga 500, the only "ground handling" they implemented is a reduced rolling resistance on grass vs paving, but most unforgivable is the flight physics. The models "felt" like they were rolling around on an invisible elevated road rather than flying through a changing liquid medium (ie: air). I've found better flight sims in video arcades. You'd honestly be better off running your RC radio through a USB adapter with the PPJoy software and using one of the Microsoft flight sims on an external camera.

To be very honest with you, I didn't pay for FS One and I still feel ripped off. I want the three hours it took that overweight pile of rubbish to install back.

You can use FS One with a limited account. Install it with an admin account and then set the FS One folders privileges (default C:\Program Files\FS One) and allow the limited account to have full control.

Good find... I had looked for something like this the other day when I saw the post about this subject, but couldn't find this info.
I'm glad this has a happy answer.

Thanks... I will try that and report back. I looked and looked and never found that. The tech desk certainly was not aware of it when I spoke to them.

Well... I cannot set the folder/file permissions to allow limited users full access because I have MS XP Home edition which only uses simple file sharing security - I think I am screwed.

Dan,
I'm no computer expert, but I found this Microsoft support file that might address your needs:

I hope it helps you.

Scott,

That did the trick! That was a real MS XP learning experience! Thanks a million! :D
