Default castor oil for homebrew fuel

Hello. I want to try to mix my own fuel. I don't have access to baker's castor oil. There are 2 types available locally. The first is an amber coloured oil from the health food store, the second is a dark coloured oil (Jamaican castor oil) from a store that sells beauty supplies (hair supplies). What should I use? Thanks

Order it online. You want oil that is a very pale yellow. Get it from a soap supply company (americansmecialtyoils.com) or a fuel supply company like S&W Fuels (splube.com). Former costs about $18/gal (need to send email to get the diapers price list) and latter about $25/gal.

SIG doubled their price more recently. They sell castor for $40 a gallon now. I used to get it there until they raised their price from $22/gal to $39.

I doubt that has the quality we require (Bakers AA). Morgan's will sell castor oil, VP racing but 5 gallon minimum, and online go cart racing sites as well. Fox Manufacturing used to sell castor oil but may not since they quit selling engines.

All we need is virgin first pressing oil. That oil is "degummed" by nature as only the subsequent pressings will have more of the gummy resins in it. American specialty oils company sells castor oil for soap making at about $18 USD per gallon and is supposed to be first pressing virgin oil as well. At least based on the information they gave me when I emailed them about it.

S&W has it for about $30 / gal plus shipping. www.s-whobby.com Motorcycle shops sometimes have Klotz Benol. Our local Harley dealer has it in quarts and gallons, but it is more costly. I would stay away from the medicinal stuff unless I could be sure it did not have anything added. I think the term "degummed" is not well defined and is really just a marketing invention. As QwkSport said, you want first pressing.

I got my last batch of castor from Stan at S&W for $25/gal plus shipping. The next batch I get I'm gonna try from American Specialty Oils Co. For about $18/gal plus shipping. As I was told, it's no different than bakers AA grade oil which just says is first pressing.

I'm not exactly sure what Stan charged me the last time. We do a club purchase - someone drives up to his factory and picks up our order. He works out the price on the spot and usually gives us a discount over his list price. But then we have to proportion the discount to all the members, so it's hard to say what he actually charged for a particular item.

I have been getting castor and PAG synthetic from Stan, and methanol from a local fuel oil / propane dealer. I usually can pick up some high nitro heli fuel cheap at one of the RC flea markets from guys who are getting out of glow heli and selling off their fuel. This year I got a case of 30% for $50. That is enough nitro content to make 12 gallons of airplane fuel after I cut it down.

Bottom line is that a gallon of 10% airplane fuel costs me about $10. Hardly worth the bother - Stand charges about $14 for 10%. But I enjoy doing it - in my weird mind it is fun.

I have been perusing American Specialty Oils Co web site and can't find any castor oil listed. Do I need to contact them directly to get it?

Yes. They don't list all of their products on the web page.

This is a pretty old thread now and I don't know if this meets everyone's standards but I've been using this in combination with Klotz Super Techniplate for 50% total castor for several years now.. eBay item 161441801493 (they won't let me post URL's yet)

I use Klotz Techniplate (full synthetic) from a local kart shop and castor oil from BulkApothecary.com. About $30/gal and $17/gal respectively.

Yeah, sometimes you get a better deal from eBay. It’s rare, but it happens.
